You're confused if you think Saddam was loved by all Iraqis. You focus all your adoration towards Saddam based on his achievements during his time as vice president which was a long, long time ago. I’ll grant that he did some very good things for Iraq before the 80’s but get serious, what did he do after he took the Kursi?

Lets examine Saddam as Vice President of Iraq. These are his achievements:
  1. Saddam set up strong security apparatus to prevent coups within the power structure and insurrections apart from it.
  2. In 1972, Saddam oversaw the seizure of international oil interests, which, at the time, had a monopoly on the country's oil.
  3. Saddam providing social services that was unprecedented among Middle Eastern countries.
  4. Saddam established and controlled the "National Campaign for the Eradication of Illiteracy".
  5. Saddam established the campaign for "Compulsory Free Education in Iraq," and largely under his auspices, the government established universal free schooling up to the highest education levels.
  6. Saddam also supported families of soldiers, granted free hospitalization to everyone, and gave subsidies to farmers.
  7. Saddam created one of the most modernized public-health systems in the Middle East.
  8. Saddam implemented a national infrastructure campaign building roads, promoting mining, and developing other industries.
  9. Saddam increased Electricity distribution to nearly every city in Iraq, and many outlying areas.
  10. Saddam supervised the modernization of the countryside, mechanizing agriculture on a large scale, and distributing land to peasant farmers.
Saddam did so well and Iraq developed so fast while he was vice President that two million persons from other Arab countries and Yugoslavia worked in Iraq to meet the growing demand for labor.

Those were the good days. Now let’s move on to when he became President:
  1. Saddam took Iraq into the 8 year war with Iran in 1980 which bankrupted us and over 1.6 million died on both sides (not sure of the exact Iraqi figure).
  2. Saddam invaded Kuwait in 1990 and refused to withdraw which lead us into the Gulf War.
  3. Saddam refused to cooperate with the UN inspectors and in 1991 sanctions were imposed.
  4. Saddam took us from being the most promising country in the Middle East to being its poorest.
  5. Saddam refused to allow the UN inspectors to have complete access which lead us into the 2003 invasion.
  6. I could go on but you get my point.
Now look at it again. In 24 years as President of Iraq Saddam succeeded only in bringing the country to its knees. He was a complete and utter failure as Presidnt. All the good work he did while vice president was completely destroyed by his ego. Please, are you even old enough to remember the 70’s? Why do you love him so much? Saddam was not good for Iraq. He could have made Iraq great but chose to destroy it instead.

In which case Aliben should have even less reason to idolize Saddam. Although I'm not sure if Saddam or Ahmed Hassan Al Bakir were responsible for implementing those great changes back in the 70's. Popular belief is that Bakir was only keeping the Kursi warm for Sadoomi and didn't really have much power. Whatever the case may be Al Ani's point strengthens my argument that Saddam was a useless leader.
