Gunmen kill 29 villagers in Iraq

Gunmen in Iraq wearing military uniforms have killed 29 people in a village in Diyala province north of Baghdad, security officials have said.

A police spokesman said a large group of gunmen surrounded Duwailiya village and killed men, women and children. One day earlier more than 80 people were killed in a lorry bomb attack in the northern town of Kirkuk. Meanwhile, the political bloc allied to Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr has said it has ended its boycott of parliament. The 30 legislators pulled out after an important Shia shrine in Samarra was bombed for a second time in a June attack. The bloc's head, Nassar Rubaie, said they were returning as their demands for the rebuilding of the shrine had been accepted.

The Sadrists will not re-enter the Iraqi government. But the presence of their members of parliament could speed up the process of passing important laws, says the BBC's Mike Sergeant in Baghdad. And the ongoing boycott of parliament by two main Sunni groups may still obstruct work on the legislation - demanded by the United States Congress.

Kirkuk funerals
An Iraqi police spokesman, Col Raghib Rawi, blamed the Diyala killings on al-Qaeda militants who have been fighting US and Iraqi forces in the province. Col Rawi said the victims were members of a Shia tribe.
In Baghdad at least 10 people, including four soldiers, were killed in a suicide car bomb targeting an Iraqi army convoy passing through Zayouna district. Another car bomb exploded near the Iranian embassy in central Baghdad, killing four people.

The attacks came as funerals were being held for victims of Monday's massive lorry bombing in Kirkuk in northern Iraq.
At least 85 people were killed and more than 180 wounded.

Extra troops
Nearly 30,000 extra US troops have been sent to Iraq in recent months in an effort to improve security.
In addition to a large, ongoing operation in and around Baghdad, thousands of US and Iraqi troops are battling insurgents in Baquba, the main town in Diyala province. The US military announced on Tuesday that another 9,000 US and Iraqi troops had launched a drive in Anbar province to prevent militants from re-establishing themselves in key towns up the Euphrates river valley. US and Iraqi officials say insurgents are fleeing the operations and launching attacks further north in the country.

I want the same, same sound of the Day of Pentecost!

I can hear the same, same sound, I can feel the same, same sound...that's the sound that God wants this Nation and other nations to be possessed with, not the sound of religion, not necessarily the sound of tradition; not the sound of repetition, but the same, same sound that loosened my apostles and 120 people – took them from being insignificant and made them giants, took them from silence and made them a sound. This is the sound that I am releasing. The same, same sound as the Day of Pentecost: wild – in God's control where men have no control and are subject only to the dictations of God. This is the sound that God shall bring; for a Nation is crying out and nations are crying out, and yes, even the Middle East is crying out for the sound.

God said, "You wonder what that sound is – in that day in the garden, that sound they were familiar with. Daily I communed with Adam and Eve, they heard that sound. It was distinguishable, it could be understood, it was comprehensible. But the day that they fed their eyes of the knowledge of good and evil, their eyes were opened and their perception was closed. And that sound came into the garden, but this time it caused them to run with fear. No longer was the sound a familiar sound, it was a horrific sound. Men ran from that sound. The children of Israel ran when the sound was in the mountain, and said to Moses, 'You go and hear and interpret what that sound is, the sound of His voice.' They ran from that sound throughout the nations and the times."

"...And God said there will be such unusual miracles like the earth has never seen: in medical science, in technology, athletes will break records as has never happened."...(more) [image]http://www.mypropheticspace.com/images/Books/BK-KC003_100pixels_3d.jpg[/image]

Dudes, Just a question before I go. Doesn't the river provide water for the criminals and killers too? [8|]

Iraqi river carries grotesque cargo
Five hundred mutilated bodies dumped into the River Tigris have been washed up in two years in the town of Suweira, 100km (62 miles) south of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. The BBC's Mona Mahmoud and Sebastian Usher have spoken to the community through an Iraqi journalist to find out how they cope.

It is a normal day on the murky waters of the Tigris for two fishermen near Suweira. The catch they have made is nothing new to them, but it unveils its grim secrets slowly.

"Wait a minute," the first fisherman shouts out to his partner in their little fishing boat after he finds a body in the river.
"His body is so decomposed... His belly is cut open - he can't be lifted out."
"Does he have a head?" he asks.
"No, it's been cut off," the other fisherman replies as he looks down into the water.

'Every day'
They power up the engine to help them drag the decaying corpse into the boat. When the body is safely aboard, the fishermen describe how huge nets, intended to catch floating plants and rubbish, catch the bodies as they drift downstream from Baghdad.
"This is happening every day - two to three bodies a day," the first fisherman says.
"We find them in the net, which is there to catch floating reeds."
The other fisherman says the bodies cannot be picked up after sunset.
"We leave the body until morning and then recover it, because if it is late in the evening no-one can come with us," he says.
"Early in the morning, we go and get the body, prepare his shroud - a plastic bag - until someone comes from Suweira to take the body to hospital."

Unremitting flow
At a nearby hospital in Kut, a bustling city of about 300,000 people, a forensic scientist quizzes a policeman about the latest body he has brought in.
"Has the body been shot?" he asks. "Does it have any bullet wounds?"
"Yes, his dishdasha [traditional robe] is full of holes," the policeman replies.
"Is the body handcuffed and blindfolded?" the scientist asks.
"No, it isn't," the policeman answers. "But his face is marked and we found a bullet under the body."
The head of the hospital's forensics department gives a sense of how unremitting the flow of bodies has become.
"Up to now, we have received about 500 bodies," he says.
"They range from 20 to 45-year-olds - most are male. We have received about 10 women aged between 20 and 35."
"Most of them have been shot or tortured. They are in an advanced state of decomposition, so you can't stand to be close to them for long."
It takes them at least three days to float downstream from where they have been dumped in the river.

Worst fears confirmed
Two workers in the morgue note the clothes on each corpse meticulously.
"We take identifiable marks for the body, because he doesn't have a name or anything else," one explains. "We rely on these marks."
"Sometimes the body has a tattoo and from the tattoo we can identify him," says another.
Families in Baghdad now know that when a relative goes missing, this is where he might be found.
Opposite the forensic department, relatives call home to check descriptions of clothes and distinguishing features - anything to give them a chance of identifying a missing family member.
"My brother is missing," one man says. "He was on his way to Baghdad, but was murdered in Yusufiya with a group of men who were with him."
"We identified the body of one man who was with him," he adds.
"He'd been handcuffed and blindfolded and shot three times in the head. There were clear signs of torture on his body."
Some families have more luck, at least in the sense of having their worst fears confirmed.
"We've been looking for [my son] and three other men who were with him," an older man from Mahaweel says.
"We met some people and they told us to go to Suweira to look for him. I came here and they told us, 'Go to Kut, you will find your son there'.
"I came to the hospital in Kut and we found him with the others... I saw his picture."

Special graveyard
Many of the bodies, however, remain unidentified.
The morgue is too small to store them all and, in the heat, burial cannot be put off for long.
At the graveyard, a new section has been set aside for the bodies found drifting down the river from Baghdad.
The people of Kut and Suweira never expected such a grim cargo to come down their way from Baghdad.
Officials and volunteers deal with the hundreds of bodies as best they can, but there is little money and few resources.
Abdul Hussein, who runs the graveyard, says they do what they can.
"The state pays the wages of the workers. We also help any family member who is looking for a body. If they don't have money, we help them," he explains.
"For burial, we dust the body," he adds. "We could wash the body with water but it is often too decomposed."
"The hair and nails will fall off if we wash them and that is haram [forbidden]."
"In the past, we used to strip the body of its clothes. Then we were ordered to leave their clothes on, so they could still be identified."

Iraq 'in pain'
At last, the unknown corpses are buried, but only lightly so that they can be exhumed for identification. The gravediggers recite final details of the victim. Unusually, two of those being buried are women.
"6563. 26 May. Female. Write down a description of her clothes," Abdul Hussein says.
"What is she wearing? An embroidered gown... Move her head from this side. Take a picture of her."
Then it is the other woman's turn:
"2656. This is her number. Put it close to her head," he says. "OK, now throw the dust on her."
The final ceremony is brief. The gravediggers recite a prayer. Abdul Hussein goes through this every day.
"At the end of every burial, I feel so sad for the families of the unidentified bodies," he says.
"I'm sad because Iraq is always in pain - I feel terribly sad for the Iraqi people."

Sad report! [8|]

Women Increasingly Targeted for ViolenceRights Activists, Aid Workers Victims of Conservative Religious Mores BAGHDAD, 24 July 2007 (IRIN) - Haifaa Nour, 33-year-old president of the Women’s Freedom Organisation (WFO), one of the few women’s rights organisations in Iraq, said the threatening letters she had recently been receiving would not deter her from her job, even if it cost her her life. However, she acknowledged that for a woman activist the risks of doing humanitarian work were increasing daily.
“After the US-led invasion in 2003, women’s rights were well recognised... but unfortunately in the past two years our situation has deteriorated and the targeting of activists and women aid workers has increased, forcing dozens to give up their jobs,” Haifaa said.

“I know my life is under threat and I might be killed at any time especially for refusing to wear a veil or other traditional clothes, but if I do so, I will just be abetting the extremists,” she said.

Nour, who was recently made WFO president after the previous president, Senar Muhammad, was killed by religious zealots on 17 May, said the WFO’s effectiveness was being restricted by the day.

“Our organisation is being targeted, and our employees are scared to leave their homes after threatening notes left on doors,” Haifaa said. “My husband was killed a year ago when I started working as an activist. Since then I have got more strength to fight for my rights and those of millions of women in Iraq.”

The WFO president, who is also a member of the Iraqi National League for Women’s Rights, said discrimination against women and the targeting of them were the main problems facing organisations affiliated to the league.
“The threats are clear. 'Women should stop fighting for their rights, and should only look after their children and husbands.’ We are also held responsible by the extremists for the spread of ‘incorrect behaviour’ by women in Iraqi society,” she said.

Lack of support from government
Women’s rights organisations said they were being poorly assisted by the government.

“Our situation is critical,” said Mayada who showed threatening letters she had received in the past five months. “We asked the government to take more interest and raise the issue in parliament, but the government has the same old answer - that the violence is general and not just about women.”

The Ministry of Women's Affairs said it was looking into the targeting of female activists and aid workers in Iraq, and agreed the problem was getting worse.

Female aid workers
Local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are obliged to keep female employees inside their offices to prevent them from being targeted.

“We didn’t have a choice after so many reprisals against our organisation and our women volunteers,” said Fatah Ahmed, spokesperson for the Iraqi Aid Association (IAA). “They were being targeted and we had to keep them inside our offices to save their lives.”

“Psychologically speaking, it is important to have women work alongside us in providing aid, but because of the violence this has not been possible,” he added. Dozens of women aid workers have been kidnapped since 2003 and a number gave up their jobs after they were released.

This Fu#*ers are real cowards and scum. Just as the country gets something to celebrate then this happens:

Shootout: Iraq Wins Asia Cup Semi-FinalsCelebrations Erupt Then Turn Tragic as Bombers Target Revelers in Baghdad Iraq scored a win against South Korea in the Asia Cup semi-finals in Thailand Tuesday, in a tight match decided 4-3 by penalty kicks after overtime ended at 0-0. Iraq will now face down Saudi Arabia in the final match in Jakarta Sunday.

Iraqi goalkeeper Noor Sabri, who was declared most valuable player after he blocked South Korea's fourth spot-kick, dedicated the victory to his fellow countrymen.

"I would like to congratulate all my people in Iraq for this great victory," he said. "We know the current situation in Iraq and the difficulties.

"We know we are struggling inside Iraq and we have to struggle on the field," Noor added. "This is a very modest thing we can give to our people."

The "modest thing" sparked celebrations across the country, with masses of people pouring into streets waving flags, cheering, and shooting guns in the air--an Iraqi tradition that killed a number of people after the team's win against Vietnam last week.

Reuters reports state television flashed a warning from military commanders urging people not to fire guns into the air. The warning appeared to go unnoticed as people fired pistols and AK-47 assault rifles. But a shower of bullets wasn't the most deadly threat the revelers faced. Two suicide bombers took advantage of the opportunity to detonate their deadly loads in the midst of large crowds, reportedly killing more than two dozen and wounding scores more.

AP reports that the first attack took place about 6:30 p.m. when a bomber exploded in a crowd of people cheering near a well-known ice cream parlor in Baghdad's western neighborhood of Mansour, according to police and hospital officials. At least 11 people were killed and more than 60 wounded, the officials said. Another suicide car bomber detonated his payload about 45 minutes later in the midst of dozens of vehicles filled with revelers near an Iraqi army checkpoint in the eastern district of Ghadeer, killing at least 16 people, including two soldiers, and wounding nearly 60, area officials said.

These people are at the bottom of the barrel of humanity and need to be dealt with in the strongest terms. Screw this bullshit democracy and lets establish marshal law right now before we have nothing left!!

Basra Doctors Protest for Protection
Even Medical Professionals Need Bodyguards in Iraq

BAGHDAD, 25 July 2007 (IRIN) - Nearly 150 doctors in Basra, Iraq's second largest city about 600km south of Baghdad, began a three-day strike on 23 July, demanding the government protect them and their families.

“We will not attend our clinics and will not do operations for three days to draw to the government's attention our plight as doctors living in harsh conditions,” said Dr Muaid Jumaa, head of the Basra Doctors’ Association.

Jumaa said 12 doctors had been killed in Basra by unidentified gunmen since the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, and dozens of others had fled the city.

“We are protesting against the assassinations, kidnappings, threats and blackmail facing doctors in Basra and calling on the government to shoulder its responsibilities in protecting this important sector of our society,” Jumaa said.

“The government has to improve the security situation in the province and this is not hard,” he continued.

"We call on the government and parliament to adopt laws to protect doctors. Tough punishments should be meted out to those who threaten, kidnap and kill doctors.”

According to figures from the Iraqi Health Ministry released earlier this year, 618 medical employees, including 132 doctors, as well as medics and other health care workers, have been killed nationwide since 2003. Hundreds, possibly thousands, of other medical personnel are believed to have fled to Iraq's northern semi-autonomous Kurdistan region and neighbouring countries.

Bodyguards

Iraqi medical personnel have adopted their own security measures to stay safe.

For nearly two years now, dentist Mohammed Adil Tawfiq has not been moving a metre without his two bodyguards, after three of his best friends were killed by unidentified gunmen.

“I have no confidence in government security forces and since I can't afford to leave the country, I've decided to employ two bodyguards," said Tawfiq, a 44-year-old father of three.

"No one seems to be concerned about our plight or offered us protection and that’s why I've decided to take this step. Of course, I’ve had to fork out a huge chunk of my income to pay for them,” said Tawfiq, who refused to divulge his salary.

"This is not at all in the government’s interests because those who can leave will leave, and this will affect the provision of health services," he added.

Lob...yeppers that is indeed TRUE!  My FRIEND U!
Just ran across the following:
Author: Michael Moore
Release Date: October 7, 03
ISBN: 0446532231 The people of the United States, according to author and filmmaker Michael Moore (Bowling for Columbine, Stupid White Men), have been hoodwinked. Tricked, he says, by Republican lawmakers and their wealthy corporate pals who use a combination of concocted bogeymen and lies to stay rich and in control. But while plenty of liberal scholars, entertainers, and pundits have made similar arguments in book form, Moore's Dude, Where's My Country? stands out for its thoroughly positive perspective. Granted, Moore is angry and has harsh words for George W. Bush and his fellow conservatives concerning the reasoning behind going to war in Iraq, the collapse of Enron and other companies, and the relationship between the Bushes, the Saudi Arabian government, and Osama bin Laden. But his book is intended to serve as a handbook for how people with liberal opinions (which is most of America, Moore contends, whether they call themselves "liberals" or not) can take back their country from the conservative forces in power. Moore uses his trademark brand of confrontational, exasperated humor skillfully as he offers a primer on how to change the worldview of one's annoying conservative blowhard brother-in-law, and he crafts a surprisingly thorough "Draft Oprah for President" movement. Refreshingly, Dude, Where's My Country? avoids being completely one-sided, offering up areas where Moore believes Republicans get it right as well as some cutting criticisms of his fellow lefties. Such allowances, brief though they may be, make one long for a political climate where the shouting polemicists on both sides would see a few more shades of gray. Dude, Where's My Country? is a little bit scattered, as Moore tries to cram opinions on Iraq, tax cuts, corporate welfare, Wesley Clark, and the Patriot Act into one slim volume--and the penchant to go for a laugh sometimes gets in the way of clear arguments. But such variety also gives the reader more Moore, providing a broader range of his bewildered, enraged, yet stalwartly upbeat point of view. --John Moe Popular Entertainment

What If I'm Kidnapped by Terrorists?A how-to guide for hostages overseas.By Christopher Beam
Posted Wednesday, July 25, 2007, at 6:54 PM ET [image]http://img.slate.com/media/1/123125/123073/2156470/2169488/070725_EX_hostage2TN.jpg[/image]Terrorist and hostages
Afghan police found the body of a South Korean hostage on Wednesday, in the region where the Taliban had kidnapped 23 evangelical missionaries last week. What should you do if you're kidnapped by terrorists?Run away if you can; stay calm if you can't. According to security experts, your best chance for escape is almost always during the initial phases of the kidnapping. If you're in public, try to make as much commotion as possible to alert bystanders or the police. But once you're in your captor's custody, remain courteous and comply with instructions. Don't get hostile or lose your temper: Aggression is only likely to result in punishment. One security consulting company urges anyone captured as part of a group to become a "gray person"—neither resistant nor overly submissive. That way, terrorists are less inclined to single you out for punishment. Also, stay alert: If they're transporting you somewhere by car, try to memorize the route. Likewise, keep track of time spent in transit, so you can judge how much distance you covered. If you decide to risk an escape, it should be informed and unreserved; a desperate or half-hearted attempt will probably fail, and draw serious retribution. If it becomes clear that you're going to be in captivity for a while, try to establish a routine. If possible, get some exercise. Former hostages call boredom one of the hardest things about being captured. Take your time performing tasks, whether it's cleaning your room or eating a meal. Also, do your best to establish a rapport with your captors. Ask for things to make you more comfortable, like a pillow or snacks, so your kidnappers become aware of your needs. The more they think of you as a human being rather than an ideological enemy, the better.
