Latest innocent to be targeted. Who'll next, Afifa Iskendar? Former Iraqi national soccer team player Alaa Ahmed was injured when gunmen tried to assassinate him. The coach of al-Minaa club in Basra, Fadhil Abdul Wahid, said that Ahmed was near the al-Kawwaz mosque in downtown Basra Thursday night when the attack occurred.

10 reasons to call Bush a tyrant. First, tyrants tend to see themselves, as Hitler did, at the head of some kind of "master race." President Bush and his backers would deny it, but their drive for a "New American Century" betrays them. They're world-beaters, and won't sign the global warming treaty or any other cooperative document. Republicans at their last Convention jeered the very mention of the words "United Nations." Those who see it differently get slandered. Recall how Bush's hatchet men impugned Senator Kerry's Vietnam War record. This was reminiscent of Nazi claims Germany's Jewish veterans of the Great War did not deserve their medals. Another manifestation is Neocons would reduce gay and lesbian Americans to second-class citizenship status. Bush's backers are convinced of their superiority at home and globally. Second, tyrants tend to be congenital, brazen liars. Bush lied about Iraq's threat to America just as Hitler lied when he claimed Poland attacked Germany first in 1939. The UN told Bush there was no WMD in Iraq, yet Bush said there was and made war. He knew better. As many as 600,000 Iraqi civilians are dead, 2-million have fled, and a nation is being destroyed before our eyes. Third, tyrants engage in outright suppression or manipulation of the news. The Bush Administration has paid off newsmen to plug its achievements, sent out video press releases disguised as news stories, banned photographs of coffins returned from Iraq, and even planted a phony journalist in White House press conferences. And it's spending millions to bribe Iraqi journalists. Fourth, tyrants will use a "crisis" to grab total power. After the massacre of 9/11, President Bush pushed through the Patriot Act. Recall 1933, when Hitler declared a "state of national emergency" after the Reichstag (Parliament) fire, which likely was set by the Nazis. The new law gives Bush the power to arrest any American citizen on his say-so and he has allowed his intelligence agencies to spy illegally on American citizens without a court order. Fifth, tyrants torture. Of all people, Bush picked Alberto Gonzalez for the top legal position in the nation, the very man who rationalized the torture of captives. Bush also lavishes billions on dictatorships such as Egypt, whose Gestapo obligingly tortures individuals the CIA kidnaps from other countries. Bush has turned back the clock of history to the Spanish Inquisition. Sixth, tyrants tend to make serial wars. Soviet Russia's Stalin attacked Finland, Poland, and Hungary. Japan struck Korea, Manchuria, China, America, and U.K. One war is never enough for a tyrant. Recall Napoleon invaded nations to liberate them from kings, only to put his relatives on their thrones. Having invaded Afghanistan and setting Iraq ablaze, Bush now threatens Iran --- three countries that are oil-rich or geographically sited for oil transmission lines or both. Seventh, tyrants are notorious for their closed mindedness. They ignore their critics. Japan walked out of the League of Nations rather than answer for its conduct. Bush doesn't listen to critics, either. The Pope denounced America's war on Iraq as immoral. The UN Secretary-General called it "illegal." Millions the world over protested it. And a majority of Americans call it wrong but Bush ignores them. Polls show 70% of the Iraqi people want the U.S. to get out but Bush refuses. Eighth, tyrants spend lavishly on the military. In the Thirties, Germany, Japan and Soviet Russia devoted a high percentage of their gross national product to their war machines. Today, America spends more on armaments than all other nations combined. And America under Bush is the Number One arms merchant in the world. Ninth, tyrants don't respect the sovereignty of other nations. Bush rationalized his attack on Iraq as "preventive war" -- a euphemism for "aggression." The Pentagon has already dropped troops secretly into Iran, according to Seymour Hersh in "The New Yorker." The Pentagon operates 700 military bases in 130 countries and refuses to leave Okinawa and Greenland despite protests from their citizens. Tenth, tyrants have double standards. Bush declares he's for "freedom" but forges alliances with the heads of Saudi Arabia, and former Soviet Asian republics where citizens have zero rights. He warns Iran against making a nuclear bomb while he scraps non-proliferation treaties to make America's nuclear ****nal more lethal. Bush threatens Iran, which spends $4-billion a year on arms, while he spends $500-billion on arms. He warns Iran might make a nuclear bomb while he has 10,000. He accused Saddam Hussein of germ warfare capability while he has been secretly building the greatest germ warfare capability of any nation in history since the Soviet Union under Stalin. Are these reasons grounds for impeachment? Not if you believe this is the New American Century. Not if you believe Americans are the Master Race. Not if you believe America should rule the world.

This is pure evil. Le anatullah ala al wahabiye al mujremeen. God rest his soul. http://www.pukmedia.com/arabicnews/13-5-2007/news31.htm

When are you both going to break out into Song....onward christian soldiers marching as to war, with the cross of Jesus...blah, blah, blah. How would you feel if the Muslims on this forum started to quote verses from the Kuran on a political arena? I know I would be pretty pissed off. Quite this garbage and lets talk politics. Please dont refer to this as garbage. It is a salm from the bible. If you bother yourself to look at the arabic posts on this forum they use many verses from the Qaraan to stress their points so why not christians too? You dont have to read it if you dont want to.

What I should have said is that we need to focus our efforts on finding realistic political solutions and not make the mistake of looking to prayer for the answers. Does that sound better?

Now Basrah looks like its getting ready for war. BASRA, Iraq, May 15 (Reuters) - Basra, the richest city in Iraq and gateway to the Gulf, could erupt into all-out war between rival Shi'ite groups seeking control of its vast oil wealth as British forces prepare to draw down. The power struggle between factions of the Shi'ite majority that has dominated Iraqi politics since the first post-war general elections in 2005 threatens to affect oil exports accounting for virtually all of Iraq's income. In the latest development of a turf war that has all the ingredients of a gangster movie set in 1920s Chicago, rivals of the provincial governor fell one vote short of voting him out of office last month but have pledged to keep up the standoff. Basra, Iraq's second largest city, is more or less free of the car bombs and the violence between Shi'ites and Sunni Arabs raging in central Iraq, but it has descended into a chaos of its own. Sporadic militia battles, endemic corruption and death threats now scar the once tranquil port. "Everyone's trying to grab resources and make a quick profit without considering a long-term programme or attempting to establish a power base for the future," said Peter Harling, an analyst for the International Crisis Group who focuses on Iraq. "The interesting thing about violence in Basra is that it's not related to the two big factors of violence elsewhere: fighting the occupation and sectarian violence," he said. Residents fear that violence could be a sign of things to come, especially as British troops disengage from the south. Britain, which has already turned over three southern provinces to Iraqi control, is poised to reduce its 7,000-strong force in Basra to about 5,500 by the beginning of June. British troops have pulled out of three bases in and around Basra and are expected to leave a fourth base at a former presidential palace during the summer and move to their main compound at the international airport on the city's outskirts. "The political battles are very worrying," student Ahmed Habib said. "If they don't resolve their differences quickly it could evolve into armed conflict." Imad Khalil, a 32-year-old government employee agreed. "These disagreements can very easily become violent because politicians rarely use dialogue instead of force." "LUNG OF IRAQ" Dubbed the "lung of Iraq" because it is an entry point for goods from wheat to cars, Basra was the port from where fictional Sinbad sailed off on his seven voyages. But its strategic position on the Gulf also makes it a paradise for oil smugglers. On Saturday, the New York Times cited a U.S. government accountability draft report that said as much as $15 million worth a day of Iraq's declared oil production was unaccounted for, possibly siphoned off through corruption or smuggling. The power struggle involves militias and politicians loyal to young Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, the Fadhila party and the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC). Locally powerful Fadhila, which controls key oil industry jobs in Basra, opposes the creation of a Shi'ite "super-region" espoused by SIIC, the dominant Shi'ite faction in Iraq. Basra Governor Mohammed al-Waeli, from Fadhila, wants a Basra region of its own, independent from Najaf to the north, seat of the Shi'ite political establishment but bereft of oil. "Federalism is a large factor behind the dispute," said one Fadhila official who declined to be identified. Waeli could not be reached for an interview despite several requests by Reuters. One of Waeli's main opponents, former governor Hasan al-Rashid from SIIC's Badr Organisation, said his allies had received death threats warning them against deposing Waeli. "There are several points why we are opposed to him, including Basra's worsening security and his constant absence from the provincial council," Rashid told Reuters. Some in Basra are worried that a British withdrawal would encourage groups to use force to control the oil fields. With sabotage halting exports in northern fields, the Basra terminal is essentially Iraq's only source of income at present. Attacks by suspected militants against British forces are on the rise -- April was the deadliest month for British troops since the first month of the war -- but a spokeswoman for the British consulate in Basra played down fears of political warfare after the planned reduction in British forces. "The most important question is not whether there'll be trouble in Basra but whether Iraqi security forces can handle it. We have seen the Iraqis are increasingly ready and willing to assume more responsibilities," she said.

ORIGINAL: Lion of Babylon Who or what is afifa iskendar? Afifa Iskendar was Iraq's Diva of the 1950's. There were rumours that she was the kings mistress but I can't confirm this. Here's a nice article about her. IRAQ'S UM KALTHOUM Many years ago, a Jordanian visitor to Iraq was invited to a women’s only party at a lavish Baghdad estate. This was in the late fifties, when the monarchy was still in existence, and the rumblings of revolution had yet to be heard. A graceful young woman in a cream dress got up and began to sing. Surprised that she had been invited to an afternoon of entertainment for which she had been unprepared, the Jordanian looked around at her hosts and asked who the young woman was. The Iraqi matriarch sitting next to her sniffed, then said icily, “My dear, this is Iraq’s Um Kulthoum, Afifa Iskander”. Um Kulthoum, for those who don’t know of her, was an Egyptian phenomenon, a singer with an amazing voice and an even more amazing following. Every Thursday night, Arabs from the Nile to the Euphrates would tune into Egypt’s state radio to listen to her newest song, which would go on for several enthralling hours. It is said that her funeral brought out so many thousands of weeping Egyptians in 1975 that it upstaged that of Jamal Abdul-Nasser’s, the deceased President of Egypt. To compare any singer to Um Kulthoum was the biggest compliment a singer could receive, especially in the fifties (this is before Arab rock had been invented). Afifa Iskander deserved it, not because of her overpowering voice nor her magnetic presence (factors which had made Um Kulthoum a star) but because of the warmth of her personality and the astonishing way she sang Iraqi ballads and made them her own. She was Iraq’s Um Kulthoum because she sang Iraqi songs that spoke to Iraqis everywhere in the same way that Um Kulthoum, despite her great Arab following, sang primarily to Egyptians; and she became a national icon precisely because she was able to sing songs that did not imitate the style of Egyptian or Lebanese chanteuses, but were profoundly, natively Iraqi. In March 2004, I accompanied two elderly men on a visit to Afifa Iskander’s apartment, overlooking the Tigris river. The woman who received us at the door was getting on in years and obviously not well, but she was warm and amiable and quickly made us comfortable. Of course, the past came alive again under our questioning. She told us that she had taken early retirement after Saddam Hussein had come to power because she sensed she never wanted to sing for this man, as she had sung for all of Iraq’s past monarchs and Prime Ministers. He had tried to entice her with money and presents but she refused them all. And so for thirty-five years, she had kept a low profile, seeing friends and paying private visits to people whom she had kept up a close relationship with over the years, but she never undertook any public recitals. While we were there, a neighbor came in and read our fortunes in our coffee cups; Afifa sang a medley of her old songs, and the river, spread out before us like glass, turned grayer and darker as the evening wore on. I thought about the visit later. Here was a woman whose livelihood was singing, and yet she had willingly circumscribed her own source of revenue so as not to sing for a dictator. How many of Iraq’s Baathist-connected oligarchs, the new rich in Iraq, could have said the same thing?

Hi everyone. I met Afifa Eskandar with my aunt when I was in my teens. We had tea at her apartment and she was a very nice lady from a different era for Iraq. She used to sing for the Kings and prime ministers for Iraq but she stop all of a sudden. I read in the essay that she refused to sing for Saddam so now I know the real reason. God bless her. She was Assyrian like me.

Yes you are right. God gives to all a gift. Some people use it and some people waste it. I hate waste. All my life I studied and worked hard but we didnt have any opportunity in Iraq to expand our visions and dreams. Always war and sanctions. If God gives you a talent it is such a waste to not use it. Keep telling your children this because they must learn this lesson early and carry it with them all their life. zim

The Haramiya in Baghdad get away with just about anything. With all the attention focused on catching insurgents and Militias the run of the mill gangsters are going about their business as usual. The new Iraqi Nouvo Rich! Iraqi Criminals Sell Homes of the Displaced Thieves Using Forged Documents to Sell Homes When Owners Leave BAGHDAD, 12 May 2007 (IRIN) - Officials in the Iraqi Ministry of Construction and Housing have asked Iraqis to be wary of vendors who sell properties belonging to the displaced under false pretences. Illegal vendors are using fake documents and forged signatures to sell houses that belong to displaced Iraqis who have been forced to leave their homes as a result of sectarian violence. Some of them, according to Ministry of Construction officials, produce documents in English which say the US authorities’ in Iraq have authorised the sale of such properties, thus making unsuspecting buyers confident that the transaction is legal. “Usually they look for illiterate people or those who do not understand English properly so that their documents can have a veneer of legality. Buyers only discover that they have been duped when they move to the house and are alerted by neighbours, or when the original owner returns to check on his property,” Saleh Abdel-Rahman, mayor of Baghdad’s Dora district, said. According to Abdel-Rahman, the prices paid for the houses are nearly half the market rate and for this reason many people are encouraged to buy. “I had my savings from years of work and two days later I bought the house. I gave him the money and he gave me the documents. A week later men came to the house forcing me to leave. I was shocked when they showed me their original documents proving that mine were false. I had to leave and, of course, I never heard from the seller again,” Haytham Muhammad, 45, one of the victims in the house-for-sale scam, told IRIN. Nissrine Issam, a senior official in the Ministry of Construction and Housing, said citizens should be extra careful when exchanging documents for the sale of houses or goods; they should never use third parties, such as agents, in their transactions. Militias In some districts where violence is escalating, new residents who bought houses with fake documents are refusing to leave the properties they bought and are asking for protection from militias. “I decided to leave Iraq for Jordan and when I found a buyer for my house and returned to sell it I found people living in my home. After explaining that the property was mine, I asked them to leave but they called a militia group which threw me out of the neighbourhood with a gun at my head and with the threat that if I ever got close to the house again I would be killed,” said Abu Khalil, 51, a displaced person who has now lost his home in this manner. “I went to the police station asking for help and the only answer I got was that the neighbourhood was very dangerous and the police couldn’t do anything to help me,” Abu Khalil added. “Until they control the violence I have to continue living as a displaced person, without money to travel and with the possibility of being killed at any time.” The problem is compounded by the fact that the majority of property – houses and land – in Iraq is not in the name of the people who claim to own it, specialists say. Many people do not have title to their own land or houses.

With all the attention focused on catching insurgents and Militias the run of the mill gangsters are going about their business as usual. The new Iraqi Nouvo Rich! These are the Iraqi cowards & scum who feed off the misery of others. I heard about this new criminal strategy from my friend last week. They want to sell their house but are afraid of going through the agent 'dellal' because the dellal's are selling info to these petty criminals. I say petty because these types of crimes are for the small time crooks. Read below for the more organised Iraqi cosa nostra's activities. My current nomination for this quarters COWARDS & SCUM award goes to the Iraqi Ministry of Education. Can anyone imagine one of London's or New Yorks universities was hit by a double suicide bombing and nearly 90 students and lecturers were killed and another 140 injured? the shock, outrage and mourning would have lasted weeks, probably years. There would have been ministerial visits, memorial services, compensation, inquiries and promises that such a thing could never happen again. The figures mentioned are the death and injury toll resulting from what happened earlier this year at the Mustansiriya University. Now, what did our Mehzela government do to show sympathy and support? the answer is NOTHING! No Iraqi minister or even a representative of the Ministers office came to Mustansiriya to offer condolences to those that lost their loved ones. These brave students have been ignored by those who should be protecting them. After the bombing who did our Ministry of Education assign to protect the university campus? Jihoosh Al Mehdi. COWARDS & SCUM!
