i read this bridge was originaly for sydny in aus. but the aus gov cancel the order so the iraqi buy it and call it sarafia. i think it was going to be in the place of the great habor bridge in sydny. it look somehow similar also.

Mout Ahmar -> RE: COWARDS and SCUM! (4/21/2007 2:51:07 AM)

also this bridge is the same like the one is faluja were they kill the americans security men. i take the text from the internet.

The al-Sarafiya bridge has a duplicate in Fallujah that was built later and made infamous in March 2004, when angry mobs hung the charred bodies of U.S. contractors from the bridge's girders.

azinorum -> RE: COWARDS and SCUM! (4/21/2007 3:27:25 AM)

I'll get back to the bridge in a moment. I came across this report concerning a battle thats taking place between Iraqi insurgents and Al Qaida for the control of territories outside Baghdad. Insha Allah. This is great news. Let them save us the trouble by wiping each other out.

At least two major insurgent groups are battling al-Qaida in provinces outside Baghdad, American military commanders said Friday, an indication of a deepening rift between Sunni guerrilla groups in Iraq.

U.S. officers say a growing number of Sunni tribes are turning against al-Qaida, repelled by the terror group's sheer brutality and austere religious extremism. The tribes are competing with al-Qaida for influence and control over diminishing territory in the face of U.S. assaults, the officers say. The influx of Sunni fighters to areas outside the capital in advance of the security crackdown in Baghdad may have further unsettled the region.

"This is a big turning point," U.S. Maj. David Baker said Friday in the Diyala provincial capital of Baqouba. "If they are fighting against each other, it's better than them fighting against us."

Even Sunnis who want to cooperate with the Shiite-led government are becoming more emboldened to speak out against al-Qaida. In Anbar province, more than 200 Sunni sheiks have decided to form a political party to oppose the terror group, participants said Friday.

The clashes have erupted over the last two to three months, pitting al-Qaida in Iraq against the nationalist 1920 Revolution Brigades in Diyala and Salahuddin provinces north of Baghdad as well as Anbar to the west, U.S. officers said. In Diyala, another hard-line militant Sunni group, the Ansar al-Sunna Army, is also fighting al-Qaida, they said.

"It's happening daily," Lt. Col. Keith Gogas said Thursday in an interview at an Army base in Muqdadiyah, 60 miles northeast of Baghdad. "Our read on it is that that the more moderate, if you will, Sunni insurgents, are finding that their goals and al-Qaida's goals are at odds."

American commanders cite al-Qaida's severe brand of Islam, which is so extreme that in Baqouba, al-Qaida has warned street vendors not to place tomatoes beside cucumbers because the vegetables are different genders, Col. David Sutherland said.

Both bridges were built by the same British Company but I think the Falluja Bridge is single lane traffic whilst Sarafiya is 2 lane.

Other details on Sarafiya Bridge include:

- Total length: 2166m
- 7 spans (80m each except two spans which are 60m)
- Length the bridge over the river= 450m, 6m width, sidewalk width=2m
- The bridge was built adjacent to the railway and used as a railway bridge when originaly built.
- British company (no details) installed the bridge in 1946.

Does anyone know the name of the British Firm that designed and installed the Bridge? According to my info the Ministry of Housing can't find the original drawings which would help them find a solution. The Ministry has now asked Iraqi Railways to check if they have a copy. If they don't have the drawings they won't be able to replicate the original design. I heard that the company that erected the bridge was called something like Holly Y Akhwan but I can't find any reference to its original designers. Holly Akhawan (not sure about the spelling and pronunciation) also built the Ahrar and Shohada’a bridges.

Now its the Yezidis turn. God help us.

BAGHDAD (AP) _ Gunmen in northern Iraq stopped a bus filled with Christians and members of a tiny religious sect on Sunday, police said, separating out the groups and taking 23 of the passengers away to be shot.

The attack came on a day of heavy violence in Baghdad, with at least 20 people killed in car bombings, most in a double suicide strike against a police station in a religiously mixed neighborhood. Explosions also rocked the heavily fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad in an apparent mortar attack for the second consecutive day, sending black smoke billowing into the sky, but the U.S. military said no casualties were immediately reported.

Police said the execution-style killings of the Yazidis _ a primarily Kurdish sect that worships an angel figure considered to be the devil by some Muslims and Christians _ appeared to be in response to the stoning death of a Yazidi woman who had recently converted to Islam.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, on a tour abroad to ask the mostly Sunni-led governments of the Arab world to help his struggling government stop the violence in Iraq, said he told Egypt's president that Iraq's reality is "not a civil or sectarian war."

In the northern Iraq killings, armed men in several cars stopped the bus as it was carrying workers from the Mosul Textile Factory to their hometown of Bashika, which has a mixed population of Christians and Yazidis. The gunmen checked passengers' identification, then asked the Christians to get off the bus, said police Brig. Mohammed al-Wagga.

With the Yazidis still inside, the gunmen drove them to eastern Mosul, where they were lined up along a wall and shot to death, al-Wagga said. After the killings, hundreds of Yazidis took to the streets of Bashika, a town in Ninevah province that is 80 percent Yazidi, 15 percent Christian and about five percent Muslim. Shops were shuttered and many Muslims closed themselves in their homes, fearing reprisal attacks.

Abdul-Karim Khalaf, a provincial police spokesman said the executions were in response to the killing two weeks ago of a Yazidi woman who had recently converted to Islam after she fell in love with a Muslim and ran off with him. Disapproving relatives dragged her back to Bashika, where she was stoned to death, he said. A grainy video showing gruesome scenes of the stoning was distributed on Iraqi Web sites in recent weeks.

A Muslim man who said he was on the bus but was released with six Christians said 10 gunmen had stopped the bus, then ordered the driver to steer it into a narrow alley, where they ordered the passengers off the bus and separated them according to their identification cards, which indicate the holders' religion.

"Then they asked the Yazidis to get back on the bus. The gunmen started to shout 'God curse your devil' and they were telling the Yazidis that 'It is not your business if the woman decided to convert to Islam," Mustafa Ali Mustafa said.

Further report concerning the targeting of Baghdad's bridges.

Insurgents target Baghdad bridges
By BASSEM MROUE Associated Press Writer - 26 April, 2007

BAGHDAD -- A symbol of Shiite-Sunni unity to some, a vital supply and transportation link to others, Baghdad's bridges have come under attack from Iraqi insurgents seeking to knock them down - whether for their symbolic or strategic importance. Three of Baghdad's 13 bridges over the Tigris river have been targeted by large explosions in the past month.

Iraqi and U.S. commanders say they are studying the attacks, which they term desperate acts by insurgents who are under pressure from the two-month old Baghdad security operation. Some see the attacks as an attempt to make it difficult for Iraqi and U.S. troops to bring supplies from one side of the river to the other. Others believe the goal is to divide the city's predominantly Shiite east bank, known as Risafa, from the mostly Sunni western side of the river, or Karkh.

The first incident occurred on March 21, when security forces discovered a booby-trapped truck parked on the Mohammed al-Qassim bridge in northern Baghdad. The explosives were covered with boxes of fruits and vegetables. Security forces did not have enough time to dismantle the bombs so they evacuated the area and detonated the truck, causing some damage to the bridge. Although the area was evacuated, one civilian was killed and seven were wounded in the powerful blast. The most serious attack occurred April 12 when a suicide truck bomb collapsed the steel-girder Sarafiyah Bridge, plunging cars into the water. Eleven people were killed and 39 were wounded. Seven cars were pulled from the river.

Two days later, a suicide car bomb killed 10 people at the Jadriyah bridge, which suffered little damage. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has ordered that the Sarafiyah bridge, built in the 1950s, be repaired within four months. In order to reduce traffic on the remaining bridges, Baghdad's municipal authorities plan to start building a pontoon bridge soon to link the northern Shiite neighborhoods of Kazimiyah and Qureiat, according to deputy Mayor Naim al-Kaabi, the city's deputy mayor.

Plans call for three more pontoon bridges in the coming months, he added. Some Shiites who commute across the river say that after the Sarafiyah bridge was destroyed, they must now drive through the Sunni areas of Haifa street to the south or the Sunni neighborhood of Azamiyah to the north. In the past, Shiites have been kidnapped and killed on Haifa street, the scene of intense fighting between Sunni insurgents and Iraqi and U.S. troops earlier this year.

The bridge was considered a major link between the Shiite neighborhood of Kazimiyah and the Shiite stronghold of Sadr City on the eastern side of the Tigris.

azinorum -> RE: COWARDS and SCUM! (4/28/2007 6:36:13 AM)

As distasteful as it is, we have to now face up to the fact that some of the people committing this kind of theatrical terrorism are Iraqis. We can't keep saying "these are all Arabs but not Iraqis". I still think those who blow themselves up in markets and schools are Arab crazies but unfortunately we have to face up to the fact that we do have a few of our own. [sm=smiley24.gif]

Mout Ahmar -> RE: COWARDS and SCUM! (4/29/2007 7:57:10 AM)

this is i think one of the big probelkms for iraq. ppl must b educated & there must b open debate about what each party wants. this debate must be honest and dont worry about upseting on party or religion sect. it must b open & all the demands must b on the table. 4 now i dont know what all the partys want & if they talk about this issue with each other. this have 2 include the militia and religion partys. this is what i think.

Some good news for a change but a replacement won't be long in coming..

Al-Qaeda in Iraq leader 'killed' BBC NEWS ONLINE - 1 May, 2007 The interior ministry in Iraq says it has received intelligence that the head of al-Qaeda in Iraq has been killed.
Abu Ayyub al-Masri, believed to be an Egyptian, has led the group since June 2006 when Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a US air strike.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq is blamed for or has claimed some of the bloodiest insurgent attacks in Iraq since 2003.
According to Iraqi officials, Abu Ayyub al-Masri was killed in an "internal battle" between militants.

azinorum -> RE: COWARDS and SCUM! (5/3/2007 12:03:02 PM)

US 'kills senior Iraqi insurgent'
BBC NEWS ONLINE - Thursday, 3 May 2007

The US military says it has confirmed that a militant it killed this week was a key insurgent described as al-Qaeda in Iraq's "information minister".

Muharib Abdul Latif al-Jubouri died in an operation near Baghdad on Tuesday, said Maj Gen William Caldwell. Jubouri had reportedly been involved in kidnapping a number of foreigners. But Gen Caldwell said he could not confirm Iraqi statements that other top militants, including the country's al-Qaeda head, had also died this week.

Abducted journalist
Jubouri is believed to have been involved in the abduction of a number of foreigners, including American Tom Fox - who was killed by his captors - and US journalist Jill Carroll who was freed. "We killed him... west of Taji on the first day of May," Gen Caldwell said. "When we can pick up someone like that who has that kind of history in being associated with the kidnapping and killing of foreign nationals in this country, that's significant," Gen Caldwell said, adding that the body had been identified through DNA tests.

Earlier on Thursday, the Iraqi government said it had killed the leader of an insurgent coalition group affiliated with al-Qaeda, the so-called Islamic State of Iraq (ISI). Deputy Interior Minister Hussein Ali Kamal told AFP news agency that a militant known as Omar al-Baghdadi was killed in western Baghdad. "His body is under the control of the interior ministry. His body has been identified," he said.

Green Zone attack
Photographs of what was said to be his body were shown on Iraqi television. But Gen Caldwell said he had no information on whether he had been killed and cast doubt on whether Baghdadi even existed. The ISI is an umbrella group of Sunni insurgents including al-Qaeda in Iraq.

On Tuesday, the Iraqi government said it had killed the head of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Ayyub al-Masri - but this has not been confirmed independently. In a separate development, four contractors working for the US embassy in Baghdad - one from the Philippines, one from Nepal and two from India - died on Wednesday in a rocket attack on the Green Zone. The heavily fortified zone is the nerve centre of the US operation in Iraq and home to the Iraqi parliament. The area has come under increasing rocket attack in recent weeks. In March, a suicide bomber killed several people in the Iraqi parliament.

this is good news but is it true? i think iraq need 2 c pics b4 thaey believe it is true. like with uday qussay saddam deaths every 1 want a kodak moment b4 they believe it is true. did they show pics yet?

azinorum -> RE: COWARDS and SCUM! (5/5/2007 1:09:38 PM)

No photographic evidence has been forthcoming. As you said, in this age of satellite media everyone looks for images to prove the validity of reports. This ones no different. Apparently theres a tape recording of Al Jibouri posted on one of the insurgent websites but theres no way of validating if this message was recorded pre May 1st.
