al ani -> The latest Iraq news about the execution (1/4/2007 2:31:01 PM)

what are the real news we must trust in this scenario:

- A senior official from Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's office, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the execution was postponed "due to international pressure".

-Baha al-Araji, an influential Shiite lawmaker from radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's parliamentary bloc, said: "I am sure it will be done on Sunday."

-Another Shiite deputy, Sami al-Askari, said the executions will be carried out after the end of state holidays for the Eid al-Adha festival on Saturday. He did not give a precise date.
"The executions will be after the holidays," said Askari, who was present at Saddam's hanging on Saturday as Maliki's representative.

-Askari said there was also a view among some members of the government that the two former regime officials be hanged after the appeals court decides on a prosecution request to send another Saddam aide to the gallows.
The prosecution has requested that Taha Yassin Ramadan, former vice president, also be hanged. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, but the prosecution has suggested that this was insufficient.

-On Wednesday, UN spokeswoman Michele Montas said (United Nations) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was opposed to the death penalty.
"The secretary general strongly believes in the wisdom of Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person," she said.

-He fully endorses the call made today by (UN High Commissioner for Human Rights) Louise Arbour for restraint by the government of Iraq in the execution of the death sentences imposed by the Iraqi high tribunal," she added.

-The US military has expressed concern over the manner in which Saddam was hanged, saying it would "have done things differently", and Britain has condemned the leaking of the video.
And in the latest implied criticism of the first hanging, White House spokesman Tony Fratto said: "We expect Iraqi officials to handle their business with appropriate care. I don't think there's anything more we can say."
Saddam, Barzan and Bandar were found guilty on November 5 of ordering the judicial murder of 148 Shiite men and boys from the village of Dujail in the 1980s. They were sentenced to death for crimes against humanity.

-Saddam's execution five days ago has angered members of Iraq's Sunni minority and triggered criticism from observers who felt he was humiliated minutes before being put to death.
A grisly unofficial video released after Saddam was hanged showed one of the members of the execution party shouting the name of Sadr, a bitter opponent of Saddam.
The two-and-half minute film shot on a mobile telephone camera has spread like wildfire on the Internet and triggered angry outbursts within Iraq's Sunni Arab community and from international leaders.
One of those present at the execution could be heard shouting "Moqtada! Moqtada! Moqtada!" at a sneering Saddam, inspiring some observers to compare the execution to a sectarian lynching.
"Basically they were doing their congregational prayers and supplications, and they mentioned at the end of their supplication the name of Moqtada," said National Security Advisor Mowaffaq al-Rubaie, defending the execution.
"I can't see where is the humiliation, to be quite honest. Moqtada, Moqtada, Moqtada is not a dirty word, not an obscene word. They were not cursing."

-Rubaie also explained why the executioners and Iraqi officials danced around Saddam's body after the hanging.
"This is the tradition of the Iraqis -- when they do something they dance around the body and they express their feelings," he said.

-"What is wrong with that? If that upsets the feelings of some of the Arab nations and Arab rulers, I think: 'The best of luck to them'.
"To the best of my knowledge and belief after I left the scene I was proud of what had happened and it was played by the book, but when the video was released I saw some wrongdoing and this has to be addressed," he said.

-Askari said two justice ministry guards had been held for questioning.

I don't know who to believe anymore.[sm=smiley13.gif]

The speed in which the Maliki government carried out the sentence suggests to me that they were under pressure to remove Saddam before the Halabcha trial began. Saddam and his regime committed much more serious crimes than in Dujail, so it’s suspicious to me why he was executed for this particular case. Those who suffered most because of Saddam’s government didn’t get the justice they were promised and those who supported Saddam didn’t see a proper legal trial for their leader. There was still plenty of time left from the thirty days deadline so why did they rush to execute him and why on the first day of Eid?

There is a theory as far as why they executed him for this case (Dujail). During 1980s many countries supplied Iraq with weapons while others purchased and supplied Saddam whenever a cover was needed. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, China and Russia (just to name a few) would have had to be named and their involvement explained. During the Iraq/Iran war Saudi and Kuwaiti money supported Iraq and it was the West that supplied the weapons, chemicals and technical assistance. This is why they didn’t want Saddam to be tried for Halabcha and war crime against Iran. The Americans and their companies were the main suppliers of Saddam’s regime and would have been implicated. This is why I think it was an American decision to get rid of Saddam before the information went public.

As for why the execution was carried out on the first day of Eid and allowed to be filmed I don't know. But I have to blame the Maliki government for this decision because I can't see an advantage in it for the Americans. I think Sadr or Badr people wanted it on this day and pressurized the Maliki government to accept. They (sader/Badr) are the only ones stupid enough to think it would bring them an advantage. Regards Azinorum

This is yesterdays headline from one of the UK's most respected Newspapers. I think it says a lot about how the West judges recent events. The way execution was handled has completely back fired and made the situation much worse.

Salam

Does it matter who said what and who did what?  I think what matters now is educating our officials to be responsible for their actions.
Chain of command in any operation, company, factory and government must be respected.  After the many years of dectatorship we iraqis need to understand democracy, making sure that our religious leaders are not above the law, they do not dectate the law, and their job is to help those families that have been affected by years and years of blood shed.  Help educate our children, pray and spread the word.
Peace Peace Peace

al ani -> RE: The latest Iraq news about the execution (1/5/2007 11:55:53 AM)

all your ideas made a good interpretations to the case of our weak goverment. and the new things that bush said:

Mr calm
I agree with you the american help some Iraqis peoples to remove the Dictator and told that they like to create a new democratic goverment under the colonization, that  peoples came with the troops were prepares them selfs to be a grand leaders ,they went to their religious and by " minute pot" they create their parties and use the religious peoples by ellections to become leaders, they were staying many years out side the country , and directly they are chiefs with no expeariances in what inside iraq ,they form a religious mellitais for politics definces and start to kill each others to get more areas in the  "political land ". how can you respect these peoples which the first leader  of them signe the killing of one guilty mosluman between arafat and el Aid elkabir , not care for the islam nation or arab nation, for me it is better to respect the cheifs of company or factory as you said rather than those puppets of colonization...................................................................

azinorum -> RE: The latest Iraq news about the execution (1/6/2007 1:19:31 PM)

This is getting farcical. The below report just came up on the BBC News website.[:@]

Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki has said his government could review relations with any country which criticised the execution of ex-leader Saddam Hussein.

Mr Maliki said the hanging was a "domestic affair" for the benefit of Iraq's unity, adding that the former president had received a fair trial.

Mr Maliki's remarks came in a speech to mark Iraqi Army Day, in which he promised to take action against all armed groups in Baghdad. He said that Iraqi troops were now fully prepared to tighten security in the capital with US forces operating in support.

“The new neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood operation” which starts this weekend would be carried out regardless of the groups' political affiliations, he added. The announcement comes only days before US President George Bush is due to outline his new strategy for Iraq.

Who do they think they're kidding? If Maliki cuts diplomatic relations with everyone who criticizes the hanging then he'll run out of allies (except Iran of course). The world's public are criticizing the way in which the execution was handled by the Al Maliki government, not the principle behind it.

I still can't believe how badly they messed up the trial and execution. They turned Saddam into a martyr and showed how weak and disorganized this sad government is. Maliki is sounding more and more desperate and has now announced that Iraq's security forces are ready and will implement “The new neighborhood-by-neighborhood operation” which is supposed to solve Baghdad’s security problems. Yabeh decaafee![sm=smiley26.gif] Could someone tell me what the difference is between this “clean up” operation and the countless others that have preceded it??? All that'll happen is they'll impose yet another curfew, do these searches but find nothing significant and then things will go back to normal (insurgency, Mehdi Army, Badr Brigade and others will continue destroying Baghdad).

Maliki says the hanging was a domestic affair for the benefit of Iraqi Unity??? Is that how he expects to create national unity? By allowing Sadrs people to turn it into a show of power? If he really wants to create national unity he will have to bring in all Iraq's parties, including those who appose this government. He has to stop sitting on the sidelines and show courage by acting against the Militias. If he stays on as PM and does nothing then he will be confirming what many already believe him to be, an Iranian masquerading as an Iraqi. If Maliki wants to prove otherwise then he must stop cooperating with the Criminal Militias for the sake of "National Reconciliation" or "National Unity" or whatever meaningless catchphrase they come up with next. He needs to be firm, decisive, and aggressive and take action against this filth and those who fund and control them. If that alienates a significant segment of the country, then so be it. Just Stop pussyfooting around and get on with it.

Sure he was trying  first to be faithful for iraq, but the 555 and Millitias are propegate him to what they need (so he was failed ) and try now to be like them as pocket fillers and stop his leadership.

I'd like to see Ayad Alawi back in the political frame. 6 months wasn't enough time to make any real difference and it was in the early days. I thought he was tough enough and was looked like his own man. The most important thing is that Alawi is a politician not a Mulla, and definitely Iraqi.

By Sdeidim I presume you mean Saddam. If yes then I should tell you that it’s extremely doubtful that Alawi could or would ever want to be a small Saddam. We all know Saddam’s background – A **** son who grew up in a family of shepherds and simple farmers. It isn’t difficult to see why Saddam was so ruthless and cruel when you consider where he came from and where he ended up (President).

Alawi on the other hand comes from a very well known and respected Iraqi family who are politically savvy. His grandfather was in politics and his father was a member of the Iraqi National Parliament. Forget the fact that he was Baathi because this was a very long time ago. He resigned back in the seventies I can’t remember exactly when. I voted for him twice for the following reasons:

Secular Shia
Well educated
Known Iraqi family
Politically astute
Not Iranian influenced
Strong character

His past Baathi ties could have even been an advantage in bridging the gap between the old and the new. This is how I view him anyway......If however by Sdeidim you meant something else then sorry for wasting yoiur time. [:D]  Regards Azinorum
