Going back to the execution.....recieved this yesterday. Ropes in executions of Saddam, Tikriti, Bandar conform to int'l standards By Mohammed Al-Ghezi in Baghdad - Jan 18, 2007 (KUNA) -- An Iraqi senior official said the rope used in the hanging of Saddam Hussein was directly taken down after the execution and is kept at the Ministry as evidence material and added the ropes used to hang Barazan Al-Tikriti and Awad Al-Bandar were used for the first time. The Inspector General at the Iraqi Ministry of Interior Aqeel Al-Turaihi told KUNA the prison administration, under the Ministry of Justice, took the rope after the hanging of Saddam Hussein and archived it among other evidence material. The ropes used in the hanging of Barazan Al-Tikriti and Awad Al-Bandar were used for the first time and were not the same used in the hanging of Saddam Hussein, Al-Turaihi stressed, adding that he expects the rope used for the hanging of Saddam would not be used again. On reports that the ropes were prepared according to international standards and that the execution room was designed to make the operation as merciful as possible, he said he did not know the number of knots in the rope, nor its material and length because these are technical specifics. However, he said he knew they all conformed to international standards. The official Spokesman of the Iraqi Government Ali Al-Dabagh had mentioned that the gallows were designed according to international standards and that the ceiling was 18 feet high allowing a merciful drop of the body upon execution. The Iraqi government carried out the execution of Al-Tikriti and Al-Bandar at 3 a.m. Monday, 16 days following the hanging of Saddam Hussein. In a rare incident, Al-Tikriti's head was severed from his body. Rumors broke out on the state and quality of the rope which was used in Saddam's hanging and that it was taken from Abu Ghraib prison, but the Iraqi government asserted it was recently prepared for this execution. The defendants' lawyers said the ropes used to hang Al-Tikriti, Al-Awad, and Saddam were each of different quality and specifications but the authorities denied it.(end) mhg.
