AlHurra TV Program on Iraqi Christians

Sorce: Chaldeansonline.net -

On Wednesday October 27, 2004 at 10:00 pm, Baghdad time alHurra TV station broadcasted a one-hour program on the problems facing Iraqi Christians. It was attended by the following:

1. Mr. Ghassan Shathaya - General Secretary of the Chaldean National Congress who was hosted by alHurra in Washington, DC.
2. Mr. Younadem Kanna - President of the Assyrian Demcoratic Movement from Baghdad
3. Mr. Jalal alDeen alSageer - Deputy President of Shia Islamic "Waqaf" of Iraq - from Baghdad
4. Dr. Saleem Najeeb - President of the Qobtic Association of Canada

Since yesterday, the program has been broadcasted a total of three times, directly to Iraq, Middle East and Europe. Many people in Iraq and abroad were able to see and witness Mr. Kanna in his latest acrobatic act of being a staunch Iraqi nationalist who suddenly shed away his old "Assyria or nothing at all" and became "Only Iraqi and nothing else ..till next notice".

The discussion concentrated on the issue of the terror facing Iraqi Christians as put forward by Mr. Shathaya who was faced by an antagonstic and hostile position by the Assyrian group representative. Mr. Kanna kept denying the presence of any "unique" problem facing Iraqi Christians and claimed that "things are exaggerated and propagated by foreign groups to attack the unity of the Iraqi people" ..sic.

Mr. Kanna kept attacking the position of Mr. Shathaya despite the later putting forward one example after another of the "specific targeting" of Iraqi Christians.

In a direct response to Mr. Shathaya's remark of his "understanding why Mr. Kanna was talking the way he was (i.e. emplying fear and unsafe environment)", Mr. Kanna responded that "he fears no one and he speaks the truth and nothing else". A remark that was faced with an understanding smile from Mr. Shathaya.

Mr. Shathaya put forward the need for a "self-rule" area and NOT "safe heaven" area as it has been propagating in certain circles.

I have to admit that the more I sit across that Kanna fellow, the more I feel sorry for the Assyrian groups who elected him to represent them in Iraqi State. Was it a shortage of leadership or simply an unforgiving historical mistake?
