Governor plans study of Chaldeans in Michigan WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. Governor Jennifer Granholm is unveiling a planned study of Michigan's Chaldean community. According to the 2000 U-S Census, about 34-thousand-500 Michigan residents were Chaldean, Syriac or Assyrian -- the three Iraqi Christian groups whose members speak or have ancestors who spoke Aramaic. The Chaldean American Chamber of Commerce commissioned the project to study the group's Michigan demographics. Professors at Walsh College will conduct the study. Martin Manna, head of the chamber, says the survey will help people understand the uniqueness of the community. Chaldean leaders say the Census figures underestimate the size of the population.
