Iraq: Alcohol banned in southern city of Basra

Baghdad, 22 May (AKI) - Alcohol has been banned in the southern Iraqi province of Basra.

The provincial Basra Council has approved a new law enforcing the ban in the territory, the Voices of Iraq news agency cited Council president Nasif al-Ibadi as saying.

The alcohol in the province was approved late on Wednesday, al-Ibadi said.

"You will not be able to cross the borders between Iraq and other neighbouring countries carrying loads of alcohol to other parts of the country," he stated.

The local administration applied the change under Article 2 of the Iraqi constitution that includes the application of Sharia law.

The alcohol ban appears to be one of several changes in the area following an offensive by Iraqi security forces against the Shia militias of radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr a month ago.

Several local bars reopened in Basra recently after being closed for four years. They began serving alcohol after soldiers arrived from Baghdad to carry out the military offensive.

THE Iraqi government has confirmed the country's football governing body was not sacked, a move that could clear the way for Iraq to play Australia on Sunday.

FIFA had warned it would suspend Iraq from international competition for 12 months unless Baghdad reinstated the Iraq Football Association by midnight on Thursday (EST). However, Iraq Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's aide, Bassam al-Husseini, said he hoped the national team would play Australia after Baghdad sent a letter to FIFA confirming the IFA had not been sacked and was not covered by 'resolution 184' that dissolved the National Olympic Committee last week.

"The Iraqi Federation of Football is not covered by resolution 184 and it continues to engage in internal and external activities until the holding of elections,'' Husseini said.

Fox Sports understands FIFA president Sepp Blatter has said the Socceroos' World Cup qualifier against Iraq in Brisbane will go ahead, despite Football Federation Australia's reluctance to confirm the fixture. With millions of dollars and World Cup progress at stake, Australia has been waiting in the crossfire of the political battle between Iraq and FIFA. In addition to Sunday's match, there is also the return match in Dubai on June 7.

"The coaching staff and team are preparing as if the game is going ahead,'' FFA chief executive Buckley said as Iraq Football Association (IFA) president Hussein Saeed flew into Sydney for FIFA's two-day congress starting on Thursday.
"But we are preparing for both scenarios. We have been in constant discussions with FIFA over the past few days and I'm sure we will be advised if they have any outcome.''

Buckley said he had spoken to the IFA chief briefly to welcome him to Australia. But he stressed the row was a matter between the Iraqi government, the IFA and FIFA.

"This is not an issue that is within the control of the FFA,'' he said. Iraq arrived in Australia late on Tuesday following a friendly in Thailand where the Asian champions lost 2-1 after news of the developments back home broke.

I can't believe in all the places in Iraq to ban alcohol it's the south in Basrah. Don't those idiots know that Alcohol was first fermented by Sumarians who lived there. I can understand if they ban it in Holy Places like Najaf and Kerbala where all the pilgrimages take place, but a massive metropolis and Iraq's second largest city? Also, my friend's father recently went to Basrah to visit some relatives. He swears there are both police stations and government offices, but also the militia have their own depot stations and offices, with signs on them 'Muqtada Al Sadr Office', where they sort out paperwork and enforce their own laws. It's shockingly like a parallel government!

Anyway, despite being played down somewhat and ignored, what the Drug Dealer says at the end in his court case (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nEGxoJWasZY&feature=related) is totally true IMO. Like you said, it's the same people who are lobbying forcing sharia are the biggest benefactors. And besides which, where in Sharia does it say it should be forced on people. Sharia is a way people live if the choose to, it should never be forced. They only force it for their own greed, because if they gave the smallest consideration for morality, they would get off their "five dollar asses" (from the movie), and do something about Iraq's horrific situation.
