Well its now official. The new Iraqi flag will no longer have the 3 stars after Parliament voted to change it to the below image. I for one refuse to accept such a dull flag, which lacks any symbolism except a religious identity. The three stars are synonymous with the identity of the Iraqi nation and our allegiance with our neighbors. There is nothing in this flag that represents Iraq. The removal of the three stars and changing of the script/font hardly constitutes a major change in terms of design but further proves we are fast turning into a religious state. We have the Kurds to thank for this as they were the main objectors to the old flag because they say it didn't represent them (they called it Saddam's flag) but why should they care? What difference does it make to a people who don't want to be part of Iraq anyway? And does changing the flag mean they will start flying it over in Irbil and Sulaymania? I very much doubt it. In any case thats another matter which I'm sure some of you will want to discuss later down the line. For the time being what do you think of this new version of the flag. Comments please.

I like the current flag. We are used to it. How long are Iraqis going to give in to Kurdish separatism? Federalism, oil, the flag, what's next? GOD FORBIDS, dismembering Iraq? I blame the mainstream Iraqi politicians for not taking a strong stand against these separatists. These politicians are weakened by their sectarian and bickering. We all need to stand up and stop Barazani and Al-Hakim for trying to dismember Iraq. The separatists' wanting to change the flag is not about the flag, but it's to see how far they can go. They are trying to prepare the Kurdish people for separation. I hope Turkey would be the pressure cooker from the top if the separatists succeed in dismembering Iraq. LONG LIVE UNITED IRAQ.

those who are saddamites are going to love this flag because it will always remind them of him and how he changed the flag and added the religious reference. He knew that such reference will be embraced by those secterian figures in today's government and those guys will have saddam to thank for years for allowing the flag to have a religious tone rather than a pularistic one.

this flag does not represent iraq and it represents those fundamentalists that are trying to destroy this country from the fundamentalist shiats to the sunnis

the stars represented what? unity, freedom and socializim so by taking those start and keeping the religious reference we are telling the world that we don't care for our unity, freedom nor socializim but we would rather have a religious state run by mullas and fundamentalists

for God's sake get your heads out of the sand and look at what you are doing to the rest of the iraqis that you don't care about!

so now the flag represents the kurds? the hell with with them if this is on the expense of the rest of the country. The hell with you and them!

Yes, in fact the only part of the flag that was added by Saddam is the Allah Akbar and we all know he did this to gain support from the Islamic world soon after the Kuwait war. So why didn't they just remove the text and keep the flag as is?

I remember my uncle telling me that the 3 stars on the flag originally had geographic symbolisms. They represented our intention to unite with Egypt and Syria and had the union succeeded they would also have added a third star to their flag. So the 3 stars initial meaning was a geographic. Only after the union failed did the Baath party change their meaning to denote their party catch phrase Wahda, Huriya, Ishtirakiya.

Believe me their heads are most definitely out of the sand because this is exactly how they want Iraq to be at this initial stage...lawless and chaotic. This makes it easier for them to plunder the coffers and get rich quick. It also allows them to ethnically cleans Iraq of rivals and potential enemy's. Keeping Iraq lawless also allows them to intimidate, steal and kill unobstructed by agencies like the UN who were driven out soon after the invasion.

Me too but I'd like it even more if they removed the religious reference. In my opinion the best flag is this one.

I agree...the idea behind the three star wasn't freedom, unity and social crap but when iraq, syria and egypt tried to unite as one country.

if any bring the flag we had during Qassim or the King.  Have they thought how many money this will cost, money we really need to rebuild the country.

Those idiots have nothing between their two ears.

Also if Iraq is an arab country, why the hell do we have a Kurd as a president?

I suggested the removal of the center star and replacing it with the upper part of “Hammurabi’s Stele”.
 
That would have reflected the real Iraq’s role in the world.

However, my suggestion was shot down as being unrealistic.

my opinion what i have read in the latest newspapers that the crazy stupid kurds wants to change the green colour of (الله أكبر) into yellow colour.

these kurds will never learn their mistakes such discusting human being and their minds typical naive and stupid people, just for their crazy ambitions.

Long time! Sorry for the short disappearance..

Anyways, I fully agree about the flag thing. It is a disgrace, and a big loss to the nation to change the flag just to please the Kurds (who claim it is a Saddamist flag as if they will raise it in the north) and the Iranians & Sistani (who favours the kuffa writing).
I too am one of those people that prefer the old 3 green stars flag. It not only looked nice and symbolised Iraq's identity but also looked powerful.

Also, it is really embaracing to change a country's flag because it wipes out its age and history completely, like Iraq was only created yesterday.

If any flag change takes place, then it should be done through a refrendum.

The French still have the same flag used by Napoleon over 200 years ago, so why cant Iraq have a flag that was used by a dictator for a short period of time? Dictators come and go but flags should stay.. Too many flags have been changed in Iraq's history but the 3 stars one has been used the longest I think (with or without the 'Allahu Akbar').

Hahaha, we are now officially screwed. I no longer like or am proud of my country's flag.
See, thats exactly what happens when war and destruction drives out the real talent in Iraq, only leaving those who used to be the scum of our society - the Malikis and Sadrs, to rule the country following a pseudo-democratis election, were the remaining intellectuals and minorities were forced out of voting by this current governemnt's armed wings, who are now used as death sqauds.

Man I so **** hate this flag, the main thing that reminded me of that **** were the Allahu Akbar (after 1991 Gulf War) which reminds me of all the crappy pointless wars and subsequent massacres of our young best and brightest he put us through.

Well, I guess at least on the bright side, it does represent the Iraq of today - war, vioence and massacres, which are worse than the time of Saddam (the war memory of 'Allahu Akbar'), no unity with our neighbouring countries who are sending their armed groups to forge their influences with Iraqi blood (no stars), and offcourse the religious cover these ****s use to brainwash the already stupid and traitorous into killing his own brothers (religious aspects of 'Allahu Akbar').

The words (ألله أكبر) remind me with the song by the same title. Every time we heard that song on the radio, we knew there was a revolution going on in Baghdad, so we stayed home that day and gathered around the radio to hear who was the new president to be.
 
So I guess these words being on Iraq’s flag permanently means that Iraq is going to be continuously in a state of revolution. That means more killings, more bombings, more kidnappings, and less humanity.

Thats true.
I think any word linked to a religion or movement would give the flag a negative image and bring bad memories to its people and to nations that went to war and suffered under that flag.

What puzzles me the most is that the new government (in particular the Kurds and Sistani & Hakim, & Maliki & co.) go on about the 'new Iraq' and how Saddam's days were the worst days and should be over and yet out of all the symbols in their proposed Iraqi flag, they keep the 'Allahu Akbar' which Saddam incorporated himself and get ride of the stars instead (which were there before Saddam's time). 

I wonder what's worse, this new flag or the flag proposed in 2004 by Naseer Chadirchi (the blue and white one if you guys remember it?)..

You are very good, Sadiq. Our "old" flag is not Saddam's flag, it's the Iraqi people's beloved flag. Most of the Iraqi people want it to represent them. So many martyred defending our great country under this flag. It is our glorious flag. Those who want to change it insult us.

Hi Sadiq,

How's it going? I am still alive but just been travelling for a few weeks. I went to the UAE to visit some friends and relatives there. It really saddened me to see that Dubai, Abu Adabi, Sharja, and other parts of the UAE were developing fast and have the best security in the region, while Iraq is heading backwards.. despite having the appropriate resources.

I like the posts here. I am glad that all of the members have common opinions.

Their complaint was that it was too ancient, and what they needed was something that will represent the new Iraq. As if the Kufy font is futuristic.
 
My guess was that they were looking for something that represents religious sectors, and not Iraqi soul and the role that Iraq played in developing the advancements of humanity, and human rights. After all, What do they know about human rights?

That looks like a nice flag, even though it looks a bit more like the Syrian flag than it ever did. But I like the concept behind it.

Not a bad idea. But the Shah's Persian flag has a lion too I think?.. but now is our chance to use it whiule the Mullahs are ruling Iran and flying their current flag. :-)
