Three Car Bombs in Baghdad; Country-Wide Reported Death Toll: 132 Iraqis

BAGHDAD - The bodies of 21 people shot execution style were found in different parts of Baghdad on Wednesday, police said. Most of the victims were found in the Karkh sector in western Baghdad (five in Bayya’, one in Shu’la, one in Hurriya, one in Ghazaliya, one in Amil, one in Saidiya, one in Khadhraa’, and one in Dora), and the rest were found in the Rusafa sector in eastern Baghdad (six in Fudhailiya, one in Sadr City, one in Sulaikh, and one in Baghdad Al-Jedida).
BAGHDAD - A suicide car bomb killed seven people and wounded 14 near the Abdul Muhsin Al-Kadhimi Square in the Shi'ite district of Kadhimiya in northern Baghdad on Wednesday, police said.
BAGHDAD - A car bomb killed three people and wounded ten others in an attack on a police patrol near a busy market in the Old Sulaikh neighborhood of northern Baghdad, police and eyewitnesses said.
BAGHDAD - A suicide car bomb targeting a police commando checkpoint on the Jadiriya bridge in Baghdad killed one policeman and wounded six people, including three policemen, on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
BAGHDAD – Three people were killed and 10 wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in the Saba’ Abkar neighborhood near Sulaikh in northern Baghdad on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
BAGHDAD – Two civilians were killed and 10 wounded when a U.S. military patrol opened fire randomly in the Gayyara neighborhood of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad, police said. The U.S. military did not comment on the incident.
BAGHDAD – Three civilians were wounded when a U.S. military patrol opened fire randomly against two Kia minibuses in the Qadisiya district of western Baghdad on Wednesday, police said.
BAGHDAD – Gunmen assassinated an Iraqi journalist near his house in the Turath disrict of southern Baghdad, a source from the Iraqi Journalists Union said. Hamid Abd Sarhan, 57, was a veteran journalist who had worked for the Iraqi News Agency for over 30 years, as well as several local newspapers and magazines, and most recently in the media bureau of the Baghdad Municipality.
BAGHDAD - The Iraqi army killed 14 insurgents and detained 114 others during security operations over the last 24 hours in different parts of Baghdad, the Baghdad Operations Command said. Three kidnapped civilians were also freed and two roadside bombs were defused. Eight soldiers were killed and 29 others wounded, including an army officer, during the operations, the source said.
BAGHDAD – U.S. forces clashed with militants in the Saidiya district of southern Baghdad on Wednesday evening with no news of casualties, eyewitnesses said.
MADAIN – The U.S. military said it killed six militants in an air strike against a building in the Mada’in suburb south east of Baghdad following an attack against a police station on Wednesday.
KIRKUK - Four policemen were killed when gunmen attacked the Basheer police station south of the oil city of Kirkuk (250 km north of Baghdad) on Wednesday, police said. Police said they captured a wounded gunman during the attack.
KIRKUK – Police found an unidentified body with multiple gunshot wounds and signs of torture near the Gemen village north east of Kirkuk on Wednesday, police said.
SHIRQAT - Fourteen insurgents were killed when a truck they were rigging with explosives blew up overnight in the Aitha village near the town of Shirqat (310 km north of Baghdad), police said. Another security source said the truck exploded near the Hagna village killing one person and wounding four others. The two accounts could not be verified by an independent source.
SHIRQAT – U.S. jet fighters bombed a house in the Aitha village near Shirqat, killing seven people, including a woman and several children, security sources said. The U.S. military did not comment on the incident.
MOSUL - Gunmen killed two members of the Assyrian's Beth-Nahrain Association Union in a drive-by shooting in central Mosul (390 km north of Baghdad), police said.
MOSUL - An athletic club in Mosul was badly damaged when gunmen planted bombs inside the building overnight, police said.
MOSUL - Five people were killed and three wounded in different attacks by gunmen on Tuesday in Mosul, police said.
TIKRIT – An off-duty soldier was killed and his brother wounded when gunmen attacked their car at the Hilliwa village east of Tikrit, police said.
TIKRIT – Police found a decapitated head wearing an Iraqi army cap in a bus station in downtown Tikrit on Wednesday, police said. Police also found an unidentified body in the Tigris River near the Hamra village east of Tikrit, while U.S. troops delivered the body of man in his thirties shot execution style to the Tikrit Hospital.
TIKRIT – Two laborers were killed in a roadside bomb explosion near the Rafidain bank in central Tikrit, police said.
SAMARRA – Three Interior Ministry commandos were killed and four wounded in a roadside bomb explosion near the Mariam market in western Samarra (100 km north of Baghdad) on Wednesday, police said, adding that three civilians, including a senior physician at Samarra Hospital, were wounded when security forces opened fire in the aftermath of the blast.
SAMARRA – Local policemen said Interior Ministry commandos summarily executed a 60-year-old man in front of his grocery store at the Mariam market in western Samarra on Wednesday afternoon. The commandos also set fire to an apartment in the same area after ordering residents out burning three parked cars, according to the local police source.
BALAD – Gunmen killed three policemen working for Samarra police east of Balad (110 km north of Baghdad) on Wednesday, police said. A roadside bomb explosion targeting a U.S. military convoy damaged several trucks and wounded an unspecified number of soldiers near Balad, the source said. There was no comment by the U.S. military on the incident.
ISHAQI – U.S. forces destroyed a house with tank fire after ordering its occupants out in Ishaqi north of Baghdad, a local police source said. A U.S. military patrol had been attacked with a roadside bomb destroying one Humvee vehicle in the same area on Tuesday night, the source added.
KHALIS – Mortar shells and attacks by militants on several districts of Khalis and surrounding villages north east of Baghdad killed 19 civilians and wounded 28 others on Tuesday night, security sources said. Sources said about 40 mortar shells hit different parts of the town over a period of two hours, killing five people and wounding 15 others, followed by an attack by gunmen against the Tahwila area, killing 14 people and wounding 13.
MUQDADIYA – A roadside bomb explosion targeting a U.S. military patrol near the Mahrout bridge south of Muqdadiya in the Diyala governorate destroyed a Humvee vehicle and wounded an unspecified number of soldiers, police said.
MUQDADIYA – Four suspected gunmen were killed in U.S. helicopter fire in the Askari district of Muqdadiya on Wednesday, police said.
MUQDADIYA – Gunmen abducted eight male students from a minibus near Muqdadiya as they were heading to Wajihiya, leaving the female students, police said.
WAJIHIYA – One person was killed and three others wounded when residents of the Muathin village near Wajihiya attempted to repel an attack by 50 suspected Al-Qaeda militants against their village on Tuesday night, local sources said.
ANBAR - A U.S. Marine was killed on Tuesday in combat in Anbar governorate, to the west of Baghdad, on Wednesday, the U.S. military said.
KUBAISA – Two policemen were wounded when gunmen on motorcycles attacked their checkpoint near the entrance to Kubaisa (198 km west of Baghdad) in the Anbar governorate, police said.
DIWANIYA – Clashes between U.S. and Iraqi forces and Mahdi Army militiamen continued for the second day in a row in several districts of Diwaniya. A roadside bomb explosion destroyed a Humvee vehicle in the 7 Nissan district of central Diwaniya on Wednesday morning, police said.
SHAFI – Iraqi special forces raided the town of Shafi (50 km north west of Basrah) and confiscated eight 120 mm mortar rounds, police said.
BASRAH – The joint coordination center in central Basrah (590 km south of Baghdad) was attacked with three mortar shells on Wednesday morning without casualties, police said. A British military spokesman said all three British military bases in Basrah were targeted with indirect fire over the last 24 hours without casualties.
BASRAH – Two roadside bombs exploded against a British military patrol in the Buradha’iya district in eastern Basrah on Wednesday without casualties, police said. Another roadside bomb exploded near a commercial store at Tammuz Street in central Basrah without casualties.
BASRAH – British military patrols came under attacks with roadside bombs and small arms fire in different parts of Basrah on Wednesday morning, a British military spokesman said. Three British soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter were wounded in a traffic accident north east of the Maysan governorate on Tuesday night, the source added.
ZUBAIR – A border guard policeman was killed when three gunmen attacked his house in the Marbid area of Zubair (35 km south west of Basrah) on Tuesday night, police said. One of the attackers was also killed in the incident.
FAW – An Iraqi fisherman was killed and another wounded when Iranian border guards opened fire against their boat in Iraqi waters near Faw south east of Basrah on Wednesday morning, a Basrah police source said.

Two Car Bombs in Baghdad; Deadly Mortar Attacks in Different Parts of Capital

BAGHDAD – Iraqi police found the bodies of 15 people shot execution style in different parts of Baghdad on Thursday, police said. The majority were found in the Karkh sector in western Baghdad (four in Amil, two in Bayya’, two in Saidiya, and two in Dora), and the remaining five were found in the Rusafa sector near Sadr City in eastern Baghdad (two in Kasra wa Atash, one in Rashad, one in Za’faraniya, and one in Wahda).
BAGHDAD - A car bomb explosion killed 25 people and wounded 40 near a crowded bus station in the Bayya’ district of southern Baghdad during the morning rush hour on Thursday, police said.
BAGHDAD - Five people were killed and 11 wounded when a car bomb exploded in the midst of a queue of cars at a fuel station in western Baghdad's Mansour district on Thursday afternoon, police said. At least 16 cars were burnt in the blast.
BAGHDAD – Two civilians were killed and 12 wounded when two mortar shells struck the busy Shorja market in central Baghdad on Thursday morning, police and eyewitnesses said. Several stores were also damaged in the attack.
BAGHDAD – Six people were killed and eight wounded in several mortar attacks on different parts of the capital on Thursday evening, police said. Four people were killed when a mortar shell hit the Fadhl neighborhood of central Baghdad. Another mortar shell hit the Rashad district of eastern Baghdad killing one person and wounding two others. One person was killed and another wounded when a mortar shell hit the Za’faraniya district of eastern Baghdad. Three people were wounded in a mortar attack on Nahdha Square near the Sadriya neighborhood of central Baghdad. Two people were wounded in a mortar attack on the Karrada district near Abu Nuwas Street. Another mortar shell hit the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad with no news of casualties.
BAGHDAD - Four people were wounded by a roadside bomb explosion in a busy market in the Sha’ab district of northern Baghdad, police said.
BAGHDAD – Three people were wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in the Dora district of southern Baghdad on Thursday, police said.
BAGHDAD – Two people were wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in the Bayya’ district in southern Baghdad on Thursday evening, police said.
BAGHDAD – Two people were wounded in a roadside bomb explosion targeting a U.S. military patrol in the Tobchi district of western Baghdad, police said.
BAGHDAD – One person was killed and another wounded when gunmen opened random fire at a crowd in the Amil district of southern Baghdad, police said.
BAGHDAD – A civilian was killed and another wounded when a U.S. military vehicle crushed part of their vehicle in the Abu Dshir district near Dora in southern Baghdad on Wednesday evening, police said. The vehicle had stopped at a traffic intersection when a U.S. military vehicle came behind, rolled over it, and continued moving, the source said. The U.S. military did not comment on the incident.
BAGHDAD – Police said they found the bodies of six unidentified people with gunshot wounds and signs of torture in an industrial area of the Amil district in southern Baghdad late Wednesday.
BAGHDAD – An explosives team detonated an abandoned house, which they said was rigged with explosives, in the Amil district of southern Baghdad, on Wednesday night, police said.
BAGHDAD - A U.S. soldier was killed in a roadside bomb attack in eastern Baghdad, the U.S. military said. Another soldier was wounded.
BAGHDAD – A roadside bomb explosion destroyed a Humvee vehicle in southern Baghdad’s Risala district on Wednesday evening, police said. Clashes between U.S. troops and gunmen followed the blast without casualties, the source added.
BAGHDAD – The U.S. military said Apache attack helicopters killed one insurgent and wounded another south of Baghdad last Tuesday. It said the helicopters received small arms fire from a building, prompting them to return fire.
MADAIN - Iraqi police found the bodies of 20 beheaded men dumped on the banks of the Tigris River near the Umm Al-Ubaid village in the town of Salman Pak, south of Baghdad, on Thursday, police said.
LATIFIYA – The Iraqi army detained 42 suspected insurgents and confiscated two weapon caches in Latifiya on Thursday, a military spokesman said.
BAQUBA - The U.S. military said it had killed at least 60 Al-Qaeda operatives during a military operation in and around the city of Baquba in Diyala governorate. The military said 74 al Qaeda militants were detained and 31 weapons caches discovered.
KHALIS – Four people were killed and 19 wounded in clashes between gunmen from two villages near Khalis north east of Baghdad on Thursday, police said. Two policemen were wounded as they were attempting to end the fighting.
MUQDADIYA - U.S. forces killed two gunmen near Muqdadiya in the Diyala governorate on Tuesday, the U.S. military said.
KIRKUK – A roadside bomb exploded targeting the vehicle of an Iraqi army officer on the main road between Kirkuk and Baiji late Wednesday without casualties, police said. Three suspects were detained at the site.
DAQUQ – Four policemen were killed when gunmen attacked their patrol near Daquq south west of Kirkuk, police said. Police detained eight suspected militants and confiscated a large amount of weapons in a raid at the Aziziya village near Daquq following the incident.
SAMARRA – A 15-year-old boy was killed when an Interior Ministry commando sniper on top of a government department shot him in the chest on Wednesday afternoon, local police said.
FALLUJAH – Gunmen killed a policeman and wounded another as they were shopping at a popular market in the Andalus district of Fallujah (45 km west of Baghdad) on Thursday morning, police said.
DIWANIYA – At least seven people were killed Tuesday in U.S. air strikes against the Dhubat district in central Diwaniya, a medical source said.
NASIRIYA – Two militants were killed while they were planting a roadside bomb in front of the house of an interpreter working for Multi-National Forces in the Shuhadaa’ district of Nasiriya in southern Iraq on Thursday morning, police said.
NASIRIYA – Iraqi special forces detonated a large munitions cache used by the Mahdi Army militia in southeastern Nasiriya and detained one suspect at the site on Thursday, a MNF statement said.
BASRAH – Five people were killed when a British helicopter opened fire against their vehicle in the Hussein district of western Basrah (590 km south of Baghdad) on Thursday morning, a police source said. The source said the attack followed a tribal dispute in which heavy gunfire was exchanged between the Suwari and Shuwailat tribes in the Hussein district. The British military did not comment on the incident.
BASRAH - A roadside bomb explosion killed three British soldiers and seriously wounded another in the southern city of Basra on Wednesday night, a British military spokesman said. BASRAH – The joint coordination center in the Hakimiya district and the British embassy compound in Basrah were both hit with indirect fire over the last 24 hours without casualties, a British military spokesman said.

Insurgents Blow Up Pipeline Delivering Fuel to Baghdad, Blow Up Mosque in Diyala

BAGHDAD - Fifteen bodies shot execution style were found in different parts of the capital over the last 24 hours, police said. Five of them were found in the Karkh sector of western Baghdad (two in Saidiya, one in Dora, and one in Shu’la), and two others were found in the Rusafa sector of eastern Baghdad (one in Baghdad Al-Jedida and another in Jisr Diyala).
BAGHDAD - Four people were killed in an overnight mortar attack on the Fadhl district of central Baghdad and 10 others were wounded in four other mortar strikes in different parts of the city, an Interior Ministry spokesman said.
BAGHDAD – Seven mortar rounds hit the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad on Friday afternoon, police said. Eyewitnesses said they heard several powerful blasts and warning sirens and they saw smoke billows rising from different parts of the area, which houses Iraqi government buildings, as well as U.S. and British embassies and the residences of Iraqi politicians.
BAGHDAD – Gunmen killed a man and three women in the Saidiya district of southern Baghdad on Friday, residents said.
BAGHDAD – U.S. troops killed one person in the Rashad district of eastern Baghdad on Friday, police said. No details were given on the incident.
BAGHDAD - Five U.S. soldiers were killed and seven wounded on Thursday night in a roadside bomb attack on their patrol followed by clashes with insurgents in southern Baghdad, the U.S. military said.
BAQUBA – Iraqi security forces detained 22 suspected insurgents and discovered 20 buildings rigged with explosives during security operations in Ba’quba (57 km north east of Baghdad) on Friday, a security source said. The source said several mistakes were made during the operation when U.S. helicopters mistakenly bombed several houses in the city.
KHALIS – The mayor of Khalis said dozens of suspected Al-Qaeda militants have been deployed in areas north of Khalis in preparation to attack the town after they fled Ba’quba because of an ongoing security operation, adding that residents were told to protect themselves because there was no Iraqi security presence in the area.
KHALIS – Gunmen roaming the streets of Khalis killed a man and wounded his wife on Friday. Gunmen also killed two ice cube vendors in the nearby village of Khuwaylis, police said.
MUQDADIYA – Militants in several vehicles planted explosives inside the Rahman mosque and detonated it following Friday prayers in Muqdadiya north east of Baghdad, residents said.

BALAD – The Iraqi army found three bodies shot execution style on the main road between Balad and Dujail (80 km north of Baghdad) on Friday, police said.
TIKRIT - Three people were seriously wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in Tikrit (175 km north of Baghdad) on Friday, police said.
MOSUL – Gunmen killed three women in two separate incidents in Mosul on Friday, police said.
MOSUL - One insurgent was killed and two were detained in Mosul following a clash with police, the police said.
TALAFAR – Gunmen killed two policemen and two soldiers and wounded nine others in an attack with roadside bombs and small arms fire in Tala’far west of Mosul on Thursday evening, police said.
KIRKUK - One policeman was killed and two others wounded when gunmen opened fire on them in three separate attacks in Kirkuk (250 km north of Baghdad) on Friday, police said.
TAZA – Police killed a suspected militant and detained six others during a raid in Taza south of Kirkuk on Thursday night, police said. A policeman was also killed in the raid.
TUZ KHURMATU – Gunmen killed a truck driver and kidnapped two others who were delivering construction material for a bridge in the Sarha village south of Tuz Khurmatu that was destroyed earlier.
FALLUJAH - U.S. forces said they killed three suspected insurgents and detained 26 others during raids to the west and south of Baghdad and in Mosul (390 km north of Baghdad), the U.S. military said.
HAQLANIYA – A roadside bomb explosion targeting a U.S. military patrol damaged a Humvee vehicle in Haqlaniya near Haditha (170 km west of Ramadi) on Friday, eyewitnesses said.
KUT - The body of a university professor shot several times in the head and the neck was found beside the river in the Azza district of Kut (170 km southeast of Baghdad), police said. The professor worked at the Baghdad University and was on a visit to his relatives in Kut on Thursday when he was abducted by gunmen in three vehicles.
KUT – Ten unidentified bodies were buried in Kut on Friday after they were discovered in the Tigris River near Suwaira, police said. The bodies were all found headless and some were in military uniform, the source said.
KUT - One woman was wounded after a roadside bomb attack on a U.S. patrol in Kut, police said.BASRAH – Gunmen attacked the British embassy compound in Basrah (590 km south of Baghdad) on Friday morning with small arms fire, a British military spokesman said. The source added that all three British bases in Basrah were hit with indirect fire over the last 24 hours without casualties.

Mass Grave Discovered in Fallujah; Violence Still at Large in Diyala
Security developments in Iraq on Saturday, June 30, 2007:

BAGHDAD – Police found the bodies of 16 people shot execution style in different parts of the capital over the last 24 hours, an Interior Ministry source said. Except for one body, which was found in the Jisr Diyala area, all were found in the Karkh sector in western Baghdad (five in Amil, two in Bayya’, two in Shu’la, two in Dora, one in Saidiya, one in Khadhraa’, one in Ghazaliya, and one in Taji).
BAGHDAD – The U.S. military claimed it killed 26 suspected militants and detained 17 others during two separate overnight raids in the Shi'ite district of Sadr City in northeastern Baghdad on Saturday. The U.S. military said the militants were members of secret cells with “close ties to Iranian terror networks.” Sadr City residents contested the U.S. version of the incident, saying U.S. and Iraqi troops with helicopter support raided the Rashad, Orfeli and Habibiya districts overnight, killing eight civilians and wounding nine others. The locals added that 28 people were detained and that U.S. helicopters bombed residential areas, burning 18 vehicles and damaging several houses. The U.S. military denied that it targeted civilians, adding that it only responded to hostile fire.
BAGHDAD - One U.S. soldier was killed and three wounded in a roadside bomb attack in southern Baghdad on Friday, the U.S. military said.
BAGHDAD - Four people were wounded in a mortar attack on the Shi'ite district of Abu Dshir in southern Baghdad on Saturday afternoon, police said.

MUQDADIYA - A suicide bomber dressed as a policeman killed 20 people and wounded 22 others in an attack against a police recruitment center in Muqdadiya (90 km north east of Baghdad) on Saturday afternoon, police said.

KHANAQIN – The Iraqi army said it detained eight suspected militants, including two Syrian nationals, during raids on Saturday in the towns of Khanaqin (170 km north east of Baghdad) and Sa’diya near the Iranian border.
FALLUJAH - The U.S. military said it had uncovered 35 to 40 bodies, some with bullet wounds, in a mass grave 35 km south of Fallujah, acting on a tip from locals. A medical source in the Fallujah general hospital said Iraqi police delivered them 30 bodies, which were found on the main road between Amiriyat Al-Fallujah and Musayyab 30 km south of Fallujah. It was unclear whether the two discoveries were related.
FALLUJAH – The U.S. military said on Saturday it killed Abu Abdul-Rahman Al-Masri, whom it identified as a “senior Al-Qaeda figure responsible for participating in terrorist courts and issuing fatwas,” near Fallujah.
FALLUJAH – Four decapitated bodies bearing signs of torture and gunshot wounds were delivered to the Fallujah general hospital on Saturday, a medical source said. The bodies are thought to belong to Anbar Salvation Council fighters, local police said.

ASRIYA – Two children were killed and 12 others wounded when a mortar shell landed in a football field in Asriya south of Baghdad, police said.
TARMIYA – Locals staged a demonstration near a U.S. military base in Tarmiya north of Baghdad, demanding the release of a woman detained in the Al-Bu Shallal area by U.S. troops on Saturday. The locals claimed the woman was detained to pressure male relatives suspected of attacking U.S. troops to deliver themselves to authorities.
KIRKUK - Gunmen killed a civilian in Kirkuk (250 km north of Baghdad), police said.
TAZA - Gunmen assassinated a Kurdish member of the Daquq municipality council in a hand grenade attack on his vehicle in the Taza-Kirkuk road 20 km south of Kirkuk, a Kirkuk police source said. The source said Taza police captured three suspects following the attack.
ZAKHO – Turkish artillery shelled suspected Kurdish PKK rebel positions inside the border area of Zakho in northern Iraq on Saturday morning, a Kurdish security source said. The source said around 50 shells hit five different without casualties but burning several acres of natural forests.
KUT – Angry demonstrators burned tires and blocked streets near a fuel station in Kut south east of Baghdad on Saturday morning, protesting a severe fuel crisis in the southern city and increased prices of black market fuel for the last ten days, an Oil Facilities Protection guard said.
SUQ AL-SHIYOUKH – Police defused a 50kg roadside bomb planted near a vital bridge in the town of Suq Al-Shiyoukh south east of Nasiriya on Saturday, police said.
BASRAH – Gunmen assassinated an Iraqi Interior Ministry commandos captain in western Basrah (590 km south of Baghdad) on Saturday afternoon, police said. Unknown gunmen opened fire and killed Captain Dawud Salman in the Jam’iat district of Basrah, the source said.
BASRAH – Gunmen kidnapped Colonel Nasir Ali, head of the department of detainees’ affairs in the Basrah police command, when they ambushed his vehicle in the Jaza’er district of central Basrah, police said.
BASRAH – British troops clashed with gunmen who attacked one of the gates of a British military compound housing the British and U.S. consulates in western Basrah on Saturday, a British military spokesman said. No casualties were reported in the attack.
ZUBAIR – The Iraqi army said it uncovered a large weapons and ammunitions cache hidden in an orchard in the town of Zubair south west of Basrah.

NUMANIYA - Police retrieved the bodies of three unidentified people with bullet wounds from a river in the town of Nu’maniya (120 km south east of Baghdad), police said.
SAMAWA – An influential Shi’ite cleric survived a roadside bomb explosion that targeted his residence in Samawa (280 km south of Baghdad) on Sunday afternoon, a security source said. The bomb was planted near the house of Sayyid Kadhim Al-Awwadi, the representative of exiled Iraqi cleric Ayatollah Kadhim Al-Ha’eri in Samawa.
NASIRIYA – Militants attacked the house of Dr. Tawfiq Al-Zaidi, a physician working for the Dhi Qar Health Directorate, with a hand grenade, wounding five people, in Nasiriya, police said.
BASRA - The body of a police colonel kidnapped on Saturday was found with gunshot wounds on the main road south east of Basrah (590 km south east of Baghdad) on Sunday, police said.
BASRAH – Gunmen attacked a British military base housing the British and U.S. embassies south of Basrah with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire without casualties on Sunday morning, a British military spokesman said. The source said all three British military bases in Basrah were targeted with indirect fire without casualties over the last 24 hours.

KARBALA – Karbala police commander said police intelligence foiled a plot by militants in Nukhaib and Husseiniya, west and east of Karbala, to attack the holy city with car bombs and explosive belts on Monday. The source said police arrested the ringleader and three of his aides.
NAJAF – Police found the body of a young man shot execution style near a police station in central Najaf, police said. Police also uncovered an 82-mm mortar round in an abandoned house.
DIWANIYA – Ten people were killed and 30 wounded in a pre-dawn U.S. air strike against the residential Jumhouri district in southeastern Diwaniya (180 km south of Baghdad) on Monday, a medical source said. Locals claimed that dozens of people were killed in the bombing and that nine homes were destroyed. An eyewitness said the air strike came one hour after an attack with about 40 Katyusha rockets against a U.S. base in southwest Diwaniya. The U.S. military did not comment on the incident.

HASWA – An Iraqi parliament member escaped an assassination attempt when gunmen opened fire against his motorcade wounding one of his bodyguards in Haswa south of Baghdad on Tuesday, police said. MP Radhwan Al-Kelidar is a member of the United Iraqi Alliance, the majority Shi’ite bloc in parliament.
MAHAWIL - Iraqi security forces detained a suspected commander of the Mahdi Army militia and three other suspects in Mahawil (75 km south of Baghdad), the U.S. military said.
RAMADI – The U.S. military said it killed 23 suspected insurgents during clashes on Saturday and Sunday near Ramadi (110 km west of Baghdad).
JALAWLA – Gunmen assassinated a former Iraqi army colonel and a border police colonel in front of their homes in the Dhubat district of Jalawla northeast of Baghdad on Tuesday, police said.

Kurdish border police had detained over 400 people trying to cross illegally into Turkey over the last six months.
SAMARRA - At least two civilians were killed during clashes between Interior Ministry commandos and gunmen in Samarra north of Baghdad on Monday, police said.

AMIRIYAT AL-FALLUJAH – Four people were killed and 10 wounded in a suicide car bomb explosion targeting Sheik Kamil Mohammed Al-Dahal Al-Issawi, a tribal leader and head of the Anbar Salvation Council in Amiriyat Al-Fallujah (20 km south of Fallujah), police said. The tribal chief escaped the attack uninjured.
SAQLAWIYA – Locals said at least four mortar shells hit the U.S. military base in Saqlawiya (15 km north west of Fallujah) on Tuesday afternoon with no news of casualties or damages.
KUT – Eyewitnesses said the U.S. military base south west of Kut (180 km south of Baghdad) was hit by five mortar shells on Tuesday morning with no news of casualties or damages. The U.S. military did not comment on the attack. A curfew was imposed on the southern city until Wednesday morning, a security source said.
BASRAH – Gunmen attacked the joint coordination center in the Hakimiya district in Basrah (590 km south of Baghdad) with small arms fire on Tuesday morning without casualties, a British military spokesman said. The spokesman said all three British military bases in Basrah were targeted by indirect fire over the last 24 hours.
ZUBAIR – Gunmen in police uniform shot and killed a civilian near his shop in Zubair (35 km south west of Basrah) on Monday night, eyewitnesses said.
ZUBAIR – Gunmen in police uniform kidnapped Sabah Abu Al-Khair, a local folk singer, from his shop in Zubair on Monday morning, eyewitnesses said.
UMM QASR – The U.S. military said an Iraqi detainee died from natural causes at Camp Bucca near Umm Qasr (60 km south of Basrah) on Sunday. The Camp Bucca detention center, where about 10 thousand Iraqi detainees – mostly from Baghdad and western Iraq – are held, is under direct U.S. military control, and the Iraqi government has no jurisdiction over the detainees.

ZUBAIR – Gunmen hijacked 24 imported vehicles near Zubair south west of Basrah after they entered from Kuwait on Wednesday morning, police said. Police later retrieved several vehicles in a raid on the Qibla district.
ABU AL-KHASIB – Customs police clashed with gunmen smuggling illegal vehicles at Abu Al-Khasib (20 km south east of Basrah) on Wednesday morning, a security source said. A policeman was killed in the fighting.

BAGHDAD - Police found the bodies of 24 people shot execution style in different parts of the capital over the last 24 hours, an unnamed Interior Ministry source said. Most of the bodies, thought to be victims of sectarian violence, were found in the Karkh sector of western Baghdad (seven in Amil, three in Dora, two in Ghazaliya, one in Jihad, one in Khadhraa’, one in Amiriya, and one in Mahmoudiya), and the rest were found in the Rusafa sector of eastern Baghdad (six in Sadr City, one in Sulaikh, and one in Husseiniya), according to the Voices of Iraq News Agency and the National Iraqi News Agency. A Washington Post front-page report today revealed that the number of unidentified bodies found in Baghdad have increased by 41 percent in June, despite Iraqi and U.S. official reports suggesting that the number of civilian casualties were down.
BAGHDAD - A car bomb explosion killed 17 people and wounded 25 others, including many women and children, in the predominately Shi’ite district of Abu Dshir in south Baghdad on Thursday, a medical source said. The car bomb was parked near a restaurant and a photography studio where people were celebrating a wedding, a police source said. Police initially reported that five people were killed and 15 wounded in the blast, according to VOI and WNA.
BAGHDAD – Four people were wounded in mortar attacks on residential districts in south and west Baghdad on Thursday, police said, according to Reuters and VOI.
