what role does ethnicity play in the iraqi conflict?
is it a positive one; as it constitutes a common ground? Does it unite the iraqi people or is it a hindering factor that provokes old conflicts to reemerge?
Which groups can we call an ethnicity?
The sunni and shi'a? The different languages? the political allies?

share YOUR views! What's the role that ethnicity plays in the current conflict?

Hey Habian, good topic.
Well obviously, like almost everything else about Iraq, it is playing a bad role, brining up old conflicts like Halabja that SADDAM did, and now the Kurds are using that with racist nationalism to make Kurdistan an pseudo-country - you even need a special visa to go there from Iraq.

Then there's Sunni and Shia. Those are more religious sects - both are the same genetically speaking, but religion often influences culture, and culture is part of ethnicity. Also, ignorants from both sides are calling each other different races - Ignorant sunnis calling the shia 'Ijmeen', or of Irani origin, or 'Shroog' - both offensive terms, and the ignorants from the Shia call the Sunnis non-Iraqi, from neighbouring Arab countries, terrorists etc...

Me, my Iraqi identity is Sunni (Hanafi) Arab, though in reality I'm not at all religious - I normally would rather call myself Agnostic or Atheist rather than Muslim, and 'Arab' only refers to the language, as my ancestors wheren't the nomad Arabs who came into Iraq spreading Islam, but were already there from the ancient times. I'm sure a lot of my Iraqi Shia brothers would have a similar story to mine somewhat, but that doesn't seem to make a difference to the genocides.
