Thought it would be interesting to see the meanings and origins behind our cities names. I know Baghdad is a Persian name 'Bagh E Dad' Bagh means garden, E-Dad means 'in the desert' so its a composite name meaning 'garden in the desert'. What about the rest of our cities? Najaf, Basra, Kirkuk, Samawa, Diwaniyah etc. Does anyone have any info?

Very clever, wow now you digging deep.
My friend, Iraq as a whole must have a meaning.  And if it hasn't then we'll create one for our children's children's children.
I am writing this with a memory of a friend i had on Iraq.net, where I was involve in running the website.
I called for Iraq's day, a 2 minutes silent for peace in Iraq, and bless her heart, she was an american armenian lady, stood outside her house for 2 minutes silence at mid day.  The neighbours, those who saw her thought she was mad, but she did it.  Unfortunetly, she passed away 3 months after that, god bless her soul. That was 3 years ago, and now here we are again.  I love to see the whole world standing still for 2 minutes silent for peace in iraq.
I am sorry my my friend azi, but what do you say.  I want to get the ball rolling.

Sadiq. Do you actually read any of my posts? Up until now everyone on this forum has been open towards identifying their true origins. Have you?

Now enough of these silly conspiracy theories and back to the subject at hand. I started this topic to see what others can contribute as there are various disputes over the origins of Iraqi city names. There is however little dispute about Baghdad's name being Iranian in origin but there are conflicting proposals to its meaning. The literal translation of Baghdad in modern Persian is 'garden in the desert'. Others will claim that its translation comes from the ancient Persian which translates to 'God given or Gods Gift'. Others claim that Baghdad comes from an Aramaic phrase that means "sheep enclosure". But I have never heard that the Akkadians (who?) are responsible for naming the capital Baghdad. Would you care to elaborate?

Don't know how I missed this one. I blame it on Sadiq2006.

The origins of the name Iraq is actualy also in dispute. Some people think it originates from the Uruk, others say its from Aramaic meaning 'the land acorss the banks of the rivers'. Perhaps you or other members might like to contribute on this one.

As to the 2 mins silence you would have to set a relevant date. Something all Iraqis could identify with. I'm open to suggestions.

This is the second time on this post that you have made these silly accusations which are all the more comical coming from you. Now Sadiq given your repeatedly avoided giving us a straight answer about your own origins and background are you sure you want to go down that route with me?

Back to the subject at hand. Your comments and opinions are welcome but not if your going to reduce the subject into yet another Kurdish/Iranian exchange. There are plenty of other posts dealing with that old chestnut and we all know what you think about the Kurds. The purpose of this post is to exchange views on meaning & origins of Iraqi city names. I've asked you already to clarify why you believe the name Baghdad is of Akkadian (??) origin. If you can back up this claim with a decent argument then lets hear it!

Why what are you going to do? Turn green and rip all your clothes off.

I told you already I'm not interested in continuing with this mindless banter. If you want to tell me why you think Baghdad is of Akkadian origin then I'm all ears otherwise lets move on.

Hello my friend Moat Ahmer

As I was born in the alwiya district, I remember my father explaining this to me.  Alwiya comes from the word ala, which means high.  Used to be very fertile land, and filled with farms growing lettuce and other vegs.  I have a photo of me on my bicycle where behind was acres and acres of agriculture land.  Then they built the school, and what used to be a club and turned into a church.

Those were the days 50 yrs ago, am I that old???? wow...and it was safe.  Someone else might disagree with me.

Memories, the girls from Al-Sharkia school for the girls passing by our house, while I used to pretend to be cleaning the car, or study in the balcony, or fall in love with a different one every day.  I remember the english club on 52 street, and the christian club by Mar Yousif school.  Those were the days.  I knew everyone in the area.

My 20th birthday i had more than 140 people there, and Ilham Al-Madfai came and sang for us.  Everyone in the neighbours were watching.  We had some good time.

To all of you good guys.

Why don’t we start with the name “Iraq” first and then “Baghdad” since it is the Capital, then we start going further and further in circles until we cover as much as we can, I will follow this thing to the end, as long as it will take or as long as I am alive. It has everything to do with me.

Iraq as a whole runs through my veins, I have been away from it for thirty years now, and I still cry every time I watch what is happening to its peaceful people, and wonder what they have done to deserve this.

Calm: I love your Idea of standing in silence for peace in Iraq and if we ever decide to do it, I will try and involve as many of my neighbors as I can.

From what I learned during my school years in the “el-gherbia” middle school in “Bab el-mu’atham” that the word Iraq comes from the Arabic word meaning “Full of roots” and it is a reference to the roots of the millions of palm trees scattered all over.
